some questions

Post by Stroudy »

G'day, i have just recently bought the field of glory rulebook and legions triumphant. i just have a few questions:
1: it says the british have roman allies, does that mean i can take any roman BGs, or can i only take one BGs,
2: how many points are the starter armys?
3: which is the best Australian website to order celts, vandals and romans?

Thanks
~Stroudy
Edit* (sorry if this was the wrong place to post)

Each army has an allies section after the main list. You can choose any troops allowed from this list, subject to any stated objections. So if taking Principate allies for the Brits then you don't have to take any legionaries.

Starter armies are around 650 points

POA is short for points of advantage. POA's are either a + or - and are shown on the combat charts. If you get a + POA your opponent gets a -. the POA is used to determine the die score needed to score a hit on an enemy unit.
equal POA's cancel each other out, example if you are both protected neither gets a POA for better armour, armoured versus protected the armoured unit gets a + POA the protected unit gets an automatic - POA.
Hope that was clear enough for you and did not confuse things. :)

Actually they are all 600 point lists. They range from 592 to 600 points with the vast majority between 598 and 600.

If you want to get started quickly, I'll be listing some painted ancient Britons / Gauls on ebay next week. I'm in the UK but postage to Australia is only a few quid.

As answered elsewhere... POA is Points of Advantage.

By way of example:

If you had your lowly unwashed smelly pathetic warband (Impact Foot) charging into my highly polished, drilled, clean, well dressed Syracusan Hoplites (Offensive Spearmen) you will see (look on your list in the back of the book):

In the Impact Phase:

Impact Foot get ++
Offensive Spear get +

This means the unwashed Impact Foot (You) get an overall +

(Until you are used to it, it is best if you count it with one hand each. You get ++ (two fingers) I get + (Take away one of your fingers) This leaves you with an overall +)

Thus, your unwashed types only need to roll 4, 5, or 6 to get a hit. I have to roll a 5 or a 6 to get a hit.

Assuming you don't disrupt me etc this all changes in the Melee Phase:

Spearmen get a + and you get nothing, so the rolls are reversed!

Hope this helps.

BTW where in Australia are you?
