Replacement points advice needed

Post by PoorOldSpike »

In the pic on the left, my Brit infantry unit in the city has a strength of '9'.
In the pic on the right i've given him a dollop of replacement points to bring his strength up to the maximum '15'.
The rules say rep points given to a unit won't contribute to his fighting strength until his next turn, so have I wasted my cash by giving him the dollop?
Also, his original strength was a healthy unsuppressed white '9', but after getting the dollop the number '15' is a suppressed yellow.
My question therefore is whether the unit would defend himself better if I left him at an unsuppressed white '9', or after i'd given him reps to bring him up to a suppressed yellow '15'?
(The question also applies to all kinds of units in similar situation(

I have Never given this Situation any thought!... Ever!!!. What i-do, "right or wrong" when in this predicament...is that i ramp up the Damaged-Unit to Full-Strength as much as i possibly can... because i figure that at least it will have a better chance of surviving the next assault until i can extricate it to Safety for 'Full-Rest' and 'Repairs'.

Repairs add suppressed strength. If the unit is then attacked, the damage will hit all strength points equally, suppressed or not. So some will be absorbed by the newly added (suppressed) strength.
Even as the number of kills sustained will be the same, more unsuppressed strength will remain, and the total suppression damage will be less. This is because both damage-types partly hit already-suppressed strength.

And, if in supply, the next turn the added strength will be fully available.

Basically always worth the trouble to add replacements unless you have Avenger and/or Prudent heroes and want to utilize those.

In case of concern concern about about retreating/surrenders, an attack needs to kill 66% of unit's unsuppressed strength to cause a retreat, so this would not influence the outcome. A unit at 9 power will retreat if hit for 6. Same unit with 9 unsuppressed power and 6 suppressed will still need to be hit for 6 to retreat.

Thanks guys, I've always been a maths dummy so am still processing your replies..:)
Below: here's another pair of screenshots which i'll toss into this playpen for scrutiny by this forum's holy men, my unit in the left pic has zero suppression and is fresh as a daisy (small yellow circle at bottom left), but after i've fed him a bunch of replac points (right pic) his suppression has gone to '6'.
(ooh all these maths are doing my head in, i need a cup of hot sweet tea)-

Reinforcements always get applied as suppressed strength on the turn you use them.

The way combat works out in PC2 can be counter-intuitive (and hard to understand).

But there is a 'L' shortcut key that shows a preview of the expected combat outcome. For enemy units attacking, their unit needs to move to get the preview (for some unknown reason).

So, save the game, look at the 'L'- combat-preview of an enemy unit moving and attacking your unrepaired unit, write it down. Then repair your unit, get the new 'L'-preview and compare. You will see that expected suppression will be less.

That the unit color turns a bit yellow or even red after the repair has no impact on the game, it's just a function of the amount of suppression in the unit.

Thanks guys, I think my replacement strategy will therefore be to usually pump in replacements if a units strength has dropped to around half, say '5' for tanks and '7' for infantry, depending on the tactical situation.
