Map edge supply

Post by PoorOldSpike »

I'm surprised scen creators don't put impassable borders around their maps to prevent units unrealistically drawing supply from the edge hexes.
Below is an experiment I did to prevent it by putting a border of sea hexes along 3 sides of the map. The 4th side (on the left) I left open so that units attacking from that side down the white arrow (eg Germans attacking Russia) can draw supply from that edge, and it seems to work fine unless i've overlooked anything?-

Wouldn't work due to the way supply is applied. If you cut off map edges, you can just focus down supply points and create "encirclements" by pinning the defenders to the edge, even if realistically there's a whole part of the country controlled by them behind that section that can be the source of supply. It only seems strange since a map cannot represent the entire globe, as only the you could consider supply realistic, but the engine wouldn't handle this on today's PCs (in theory it probably could have absurdly large maps, but would get increasingly tough to run).

The same principle you applied to the attacking side here also needs to apply to the defenders. Putting water to restrict it would make scenarios easier, but not make more sense.

The current edge supply system is highly unrealistic, for example the topmost car is sitting happily in an edge hex and can't be surrounded to cut off his supply, so every turn he'll simply get a big bunch of replacements and be as freah as a daisy-

If anybody can suggest how the system can be improved please go ahead..:)

The top unit actually can be encircled (put a unit on the left and on the right of it). But if the hex pattern is zigzag like on a vertical edge, indeed a unit cannot be encircled, which is a design error. But as I understand it, the core engine of the game is hard to change. Maybe there will be a PC3.

Surrounding is always possible, it means that an enemy unit has no hex to retreat to. It will surrender instead, if an attack would otherwise make it retreat.

This is still, pun intended, and edge case. Should not come up that often and I feel that since we cannot represent the entire globe, giving the border edges be source of supply and affecting the way units can be encircled is a fair compromise. I don't see a reasonable alternative within the game rules. Current system is not ideal, but good enough. Maybe one day this can evolve further, but it is not this day.

This exactly. The whole supply system would have to change in some major way and that likely not only requires a lot of coding, but also thought how to implement (which has impact on maps retroactively, so I don't see it occurring).

Thanks guys, so it seems a unit on the map edges CAN be encircled IF there's an enemy unit on both sides of it as the two examples below confirm (yellow-circled units are out of supply)-
