[BnW - Byz vs Ita] 3- Walls of Ioannina

Post by StuccoFresco »

The northern front has been secured: despite grievous losses our forces have stopped the Italians’ advance. The enemy has wasted an enormous amount of resources and soldiers trying to break through and failed, stopping their victorious streak and raising the first doubts about the inevitability of victory in the minds of the Italian Parliament.

Eager to prove the doubters wrong, the Italian King has ordered a decisive offensive that would shatter the Free States: a direct attack through the Ioannina Gate toward Byzantium itself.

After the fall of Tirana, Ioannina was the last defensible position before the Byzantine Heartlands, and thus has been defended with tooth and nail. Since the first probing attacks failed, our forces have fortified the valley and pushed back every Italian attempt to conquer a bridgehead over the Acheronte river. While the front has seen little changes in the last months, combat never stopped and both armies exhausted ammo and soldiers in relentless fights.

Now the Italians have concentrated a critical mass of troops and materials and will try to break through. Hundreds of tanks and assault guns have been spotted on the eastern shore of the Acheronte, as well as large concentrations of artillery. Our first line is manned by seasoned veterans, but many units are understrength. Even our reserves are partially made up of weakened but experienced units. Every town from the river to Ioannina has been fortified. Our layered defenses will allow us to give up terrain in exchange for time: we’ll need to bleed the enemy out in an attrition battle. I will probably have to withdraw to avoid being shelled to death by enemy artillery.

The enemy predictably opens the battle with a heavy artillery barrage along the entire front, followed by a fording attempt by elite troops around the ruined town of Siatista. The 20° Arditi Brigade leads the way, so I bombard it with my artillery and counterattack the bridgehead with the 59th Hoplitai Division.

Further Northeast several Centurie Regiments are also fording the river and the enemy artillery support has already crippled my troops, so I start retreating some Regiment westward. The 34th Hoplitai Division will be entirely withdrawn from its positions and will move west as well.

South of Siatista the 70° Brigata Arditi has forded the river as well, supported by the 3rd “Caere” Division. Those elite units have shattered the lines of the 155th Hoplitai Division: two of its Regiments have been routed, so I’ll retreat them further west.

The Ioannina Air Defense group masses its Interceptors around the 4° Peltastes Group’s planes: the tight formation hits hard against the Italian penetration south of Siatista and our planes manage to down a dozens or so Italian bombers as well.

The battle around Siatista goes on: the 59th Hoplitai Division is well supported by artillery and AT guns so it’s still pushing back the fording attempts. Further northeast, however, two Centuria Divisions have broken through my lines and the 20th Hoplitai has been routed. The 21st Hoplitai Division still holds the ground, but the enemy’s strength is overwhelming.

I’m pushing forward my mobile reserves to see if I can ambush some armored vanguard, but for now there are no available targets. The V and VI Hetairoi Corps are itching for a fight.

In the south, the 155th Hoplitai Division has been decimated, but the local fortified area is making the Italians pay for every inch. My air force keeps hitting hard, wiping out two weakened Italian Bomber Wings, and my Peltastes blow up more assault guns of the 22° Brigata Arditi.

12/3/1942
Enemy fighter planes jump on one of my Peltastes Wings and annihilate it; I have to pull back the rest of my air forces to resupply.

Enemy forces have expanded the bridgeheads north of Siatista, even trying to intercept the 34th Hoplitai Division moving west. It’s too late to pull back my artillery units from the front, but I’ll try to bleed the advancing Italians a bit more.

The 1st Katafraktoi Division in the south has stalled the enemy advance, taking advantage of my fortified area’s AT coverage to avoid an Italian armored thrust. A Regiment of the 3rd “Caere” Division that tried to approach the forts were mauled by the defenders and by a counterattack of the Katafraktoi unit.

The V Hetairoi Corps is forming a defensive perimeter to cover the retreat of the remains of the units that defended the Siatista front.
Image

13/3/1942
The I Thema has been destroyed, the few survivors fleeing west. I’m forming two defensive perimeters with the Hetairoi Corps, strengthened by AT Regiment and counterattacking the enemy’s mechanized vanguards. The 2nd Katafraktoi Division pushes back the 11th “Volsinii” Division that was advancing north of Aiani, shattering one of its Regiments.

In the south I have to cede a bit of ground, but the fortified area still limits the enemy’s freedom of maneuver. Some Italian Motorized Divisions are seen moving forward to exploit the breach.
Image

14/3/1942
The V Hetairoi Corps counterattacks the 70° Brigata Arditi and the 11th Clibanarii Division, hitting hard and preventing a wedge separating it from Aiani. The VI Hetairoi Corps is still helping extricate the survivors of the battle for Siatista from the enemy’s grasp, but launches a counterattack against the 11th “Volsini” as well.

Our planes bomb the enemy armored formations. In the north, I’m shuffling the 73rd and 34th Hoplitai Divisions around to establish blocking positions before Ptolemaida.

In the south, enemy artillery units are in range of the fortified area that was helping a lot with my defensive effort in this area. If the shelling intensifies I will be forced to abandon the position and retreat, leaving the southern flank of the V Hetairoi Corps open. I better start withdrawing the last Regiment of the 155th Hoplitai Division toward Orestiko and join the other one already there.
Image

15/3/1942
The V Hetairoi Corps in the south pushes back some Italian Motorized units and finishes off a Clibanarii Regiment that advanced too far. A Regiment of the 1st Katafraktoi Division is still fighting around my crumbling fortified area in the southeast but it’s quite overextended, I’ll probably pull it back next turn.

In the north, the VI Hetairoi Corps is definitely in trouble: Italian armored and mechanized troops are slowly chipping away at the 2nd Katafraktoi Division and the HQ is quite exposed. What’s left of the 21st and 59th Hetairoi Divisions is retreating west so my armor is lacking infantry support. The 73rd Hoplitai Division is taking up defensive positions around a hill northwest of Aiani and I can’t send it forward to support my tanks.

Enemy fighters decimates another Peltastes Wing, now only the 12th Wing can be counted upon to thin out the enemy armored units. My Interceptors are trying all they can to keep the enemy planes away, but it’s not easy and our CAS planes are high-priority targets for the enemy.

The Italian VII Coorte advances in the south, wipes out my fortified area with the 20° Arditi Brigade and risks cutting off the lone 1st Katafraktoi’s Regiment, so I withdraw it. The enemy is trying to put the V Hetairoi under pressure and uses a Bomber Wing to soften it up. I have to shuffle my units around to keep up a strong defensive perimeter, and I gang up on the enemy bombers with my Interceptors, downing every single one in sight.

Aiani’s defenses see a Regiment of the 11th Clibanarii Division approaching from the north supported by an understrength Motorized Regiment, so I launch a flanking attack with the 2nd Katafraktoi Division, smash the Motorized troops and cut off the advancing armor. The VI Hetairoi Corps’ HQ retreats west.
Image

17/3/1942
The muddy terrain is slowing down the enemy’s advance, but is also slowing down my withdrawing troops. The VI Hetairoi Corps has been caught up in the open while retreating so I will have to pull it back entirely to avoid ending up cut off or losing the HQ. The 1st Katafraktoi Division’s lone Regimen down south has also failed to extricate itself in time and has been mauled by overwhelming numbers of enemy Arditi and Clibanarii units.

The V Hetairoi Corps withdraws west as well.

More Italian Motorized Divisions are entering the valley, but the enemy’s advance is rather focused in the middle of the map so they lack space to deploy their troops adequately. The bulk of the enemy force has reached Aiani.
Image

18/3/1942
The Italian’s VIII Coorte Corazzata is pushing hard south of Aiani, forcing the V Hetairoi Corps further back. I’m trying to reconstitute and reorganize the remnants of the 10th Koursorses Division for a rearguard action further west.

At Aiani, the 36th Hoplitai Division keeps pushing back every probing attack on the town, but further north Italian motorized and armored troops are pushing a wedge between them and the 73rd Hoplitai Division. The VI Hetairoi Corps will be retreated behind the infantry units, rest and reorganize.
Image

19/3/1942
The enemy advances, but we managed to hold them off for 10 days and that’s good enough for the higher-ups to give us reinforcements: the 156th and 157th Hoplitai Divisions are now available. I’ll use both to bolster the Kastoria-Amyntao defensive line.

The enemy’s offensive is also running into supply problems, so their effectiveness will start falling.

The VIII Coorte Corazzata has seemingly split its units north and south of Aiani, trying to encircle the town and its defenders. My Hetairoi Corps are too worn down to push it back, so I accept the outcome and pull further back.
Image

20/3/1942
The enemy advances and Aiani is almost encircled, the 36th Hoplitai Division struggling to hold its perimeter. The Hetairoi Corps are retreating west, hoping to establish a new defensive line from Orestiko to Ptolemaida. Another Artillery Regiment will be left behind, unable to withdraw in time.

Air recon spots more than a thousand artillery guns moving forward, including 200 heavy pieces: if the enemy manages to pull them into range, they could pulverize anything I can set up. One of the siege gun Regiments opens fire on Aiani.
Image

21/3/1942
The Italian 25th Divisione Motorizzata advances between Orestiko and the rest of the defensive line, threatening the area where the 10th Koursorses Division was trying to rest and reconstitute, so I have to retreat it further west. At Orestiko, though, the 82nd Hoplitai Division blunts the 23rd Divisione Motorizzata’s attempt to storm the town.

Aiani has fallen, but the last Regiment of the 36th Hoplitai Division is still fighting in the woodlands on the western outskirts. Northwest of the city the 73rd Hoplitai Division pushes back another Motorized Regiment that was trying to approach Ptolemaida.

The 156th and 157th Hoplitai Divisions are still moving toward the Kastoria-Amyntaio line, and I have ordered the Artillery Regiment guarding Florina to move there as well.
Image

22/3/1942
The enemy is pushing more armor and more infantry in the Valley and crushes the resistance near Aiani. Motorized units start to probe my positions in the center of the map, but so far there’s nothing too dangerous.

I finally manage to withdraw the 10th Koursorses Division behind the Kastoria-Amyntaio line. The reinforcements are arriving as well.

The 12th Peltastes Wing is decimated by enemy fighters, it’s my last operational CAS unit and it’s down to 10 planes…

23/3/1942
THe 99° Varangian Brigade is fighting back against all Italian units that approach my strong defensive positions in the middle of the map. The enemy is piling its troops against that bulwark, but at the same time it’s sending motorized units to flank it from the south. I have no mobile reserve there, but the enemy isn’t threatening enough yet.

The main enemy thrust seems to be avoiding the 73rd Hoplitai Division’s positions in the north, this leaves it free to stage limited counterattacks on the units passing by.

Enemy forces including a Centuria Regiment and the 20° Arditi Brigade are engaging my defenses at Orestiko.
Image

24/3/1942
Perhaps too eager to get to the Kastoria-Amyntaio line, the 26th Divisione Motorizzata advances too far and gets cut off. Its leading elements are also shelled by the long range Heavy Artillery unit I have placed behind the main fortified line.

Enemy forces are pushing hard against the 82nd Hoplitai Division at Orestiko and are now trying to flank the 73rd Hoplitai Division from the north. Both units fight back and redeploy where needed.

In the center, the enemy forces aren’t strong enough to threaten the first line, but I keep my reserves ready.

25/3/1942
An Italian breakthrough in the center seems unlikely: my defensive line is several units-deep, is well supported by AT Regiments and is anchored to solid defensive terrain. The gap between it and Orestiko is being exploited by enemy forces, but it’s still too narrow to allow them to deploy a lot of units. The fate of the 26th Divisione Motorizzata is there to warn the enemy about the opportunity to send units through said gap: what’s left of two of its Regiments are still cut off and under artillery fire, ready to surrender.

26/3/1942
The enemy has finally pulled forward some artillery Regiment, so now they could truly engage my defenses in the middle of the map. It’s bad news, but makes the battle much more interesting.

Italian units also have broken through the 82nd Hoplitai Division’s ranks at Orestiko, and now the town’s fortified garrison is standing alone on that flank. This could also make the battle in the middle of the map much more difficult.

27/3/1942
The gap is widening, and armored units are starting to pass through it, forcing me to redeploy my AT assets to protect the southern flank of my units in the middle of the map.

An Italian penetration against the 73rd Hoplitai Division’s flank has stalled: the Arditi Brigade has plowed through my infantry lines but is now facing an AT Regiment and can’t advance more.

The Italian stragglers in the woods east of the Kastoria-Amyntaio line have been rounded up.
Image

28/3/1942
With the help of their artillery and fresh mechanized troops from the 2nd “Clevsin” Division, the Italians break through my lines in the middle. Fresh Italian troops are also responsible for breaking through the 73rd Hoplitai Division’s lines in the north. This one-two blow can turn the tide of the battle, so I scramble my reserves to plug the gaps.

The armored units that led the breakthrough in the middle are pushed back, and thus the last surviving regiment of the 26th Divisione Motorizzata is cut off and alone in the middle of my units. In the north I have to withdraw some km to straighten my front line and keep my infantry covered by AT units.

Italian armored elements from the 11th and 9th Clibanarii Divisions have passed north of Orestiko and are now heading toward the Kastoria-Amyntaio line. My heavy artillery has started firing against their vanguards.
Image

29/3/1942
A Regiment of the 2nd “Clevsin” Division pushes toward Ptolemaida, but is cut off by a joint effort of the 1st and 2nd Katafraktoi Divisions. Crushing that Regiment would be a huge win.

The Italian armor advancing west stops as soon as it reaches the Kastoria-Amyntaio line, and is immediately shelled by several Artillery Regiments. I don’t see it ending well for them.

Orestiko’s fortified garrison is bleeding out two Centuria Regiments.

In the north, the 73rd Hoplitai Division has been almost entirely destroyed, but the 34th Hoplitai Division has taken up its positions and is defending the perimeter.

30-31/3/1942
The Italians are slowly eating away my troops in the middle of the map, but local counterattacks and the sheer depth of my defenses tells me they won’t make it in time.

Orestiko still stands and my mobile reserves can cut off any deep thrust toward the Kastoria-Amyntaio line, making it essentially unassailable until my troops in the middle of the map are removed.

The Regiment of the 2nd “Clevsin” Division surrounded near Ptolemaida surrenders.
Image

1/4/1942
Orestiko’s garrison has been suppressed by enemy artillery, and the gap is now being exploited by more and more Italian units. They pushed their artillery forward, but a bit too much: I can launch two counterattacks that capture or destroy dozens of guns that were brought right to my doorstep.
Image

2-4/4/1942
The enemy’s offensive has drawn a wedge between Ptolemaida and the rest of the units in the middle of the map, but a series of counterattacks push back the invading enemy units.

Italian units are still marching up to the Kastoria-Amyntaio line, but they aren’t setting up an organized offensive: their troops reach the line piecemeal and are easy prey for my artillery and localized counterattacks. So far, the line is holding comfortably.

5/4/1942
Orestiko is falling, and up north the 34th Hoplitai Division has been decimated by artillery fire. I still launch local counterattacks in the middle, making any serious attempt against the Kastoria-Amyntaio line impossible.
Image

6/4/1942
The pressure of the massed Italian artillery in the middle has become too great, so I retreat my units out of range. The 9° and 99° Varangian Brigades withdraw as well: those guys have fought bravely against overwhelming numbers for weeks and I don’t want to see them wiped out under artillery fire.

Orestiko has fallen and the 34th Hoplitai Division is retreating, but Ptolemaida is still well defended so I am confident it will hold until the end.

7/4/1942
Aerial recon clarifies that the Italians have almost no troops fit for combat left: there is a lump of decimated units in the middle of the map and a couple Arditi Brigades still hanging in the backline, and not much more. They still have hundreds of artillery guns, but not enough combat troops to actually attack me anymore.
Image

8/4/1942
To salute the end of this battle, the 84th Hoplitai Division at Ptolemaida launches a counterattack, destroying dozens of Italian guns. After that I destroy a couple mechanized and armored units in front of the Kastoria-Amyntaio line and end the battle.

It has been an interesting setup, but the enemy forces were unable to break through the middle and more than anything unable to keep their artillery closer to the frontline. The assault troops advanced too quickly and ended up attacking too often without artillery preparations, eating way too many casualties against prepared defenses.

I will probably ramp up the difficulty of this battle somehow.
