Beginning thoughts for Oxford FOGR events in 2026

Post by tjelsworth »

All,

As it is now end of August it seems timely to begin to think about next year.

All is up for grabs as the club meets one Sunday every month and we can take our pick of both which months and how many. The limiting factor is that we cannot, in fairness to other club members have more than 12 players - but that has not been an issue to date.

So, which months and how many and what mix of 15mm and 25mm events ( or even hold both simultaneously in every round). Also what themes or should the events be more open in some way or completely open?

Personally I like the themes provided not too narrow, and am quite drawn to being able to enter as 25mm whenever there is a theme for which I have a suitable force.

As a source of themes we have Bobs excellent list (so far we have used about 2/3 of them) or we could go for rather broader themes such as in my suggested list below. Also below are some suggestions for event months.

How about February (15mm), April (25mm), June (15mm) September (15mm), December (25mm).
All themes open within the following limits:
Arquebus the most advanced weapon
Musket the most advanced weapon
Bayonet available
British Isles 1500to 1700
Northern Mainland Europe 1500 to 1700
Southern Europe 1500 to 1700
Eastern Europe 1500 to 1700
Colonial forces 1500 to 1700
Ottoman armies and enemies 1500 to 1700
Non-European forces 1500 to 1700
Mounted forces, at least 75% of points are mounted or elephants

Great to have views from everyone and we should discuss on Sept 14 ( as theD3cember event is leaving it too late).

So far I have received one vote for tight themes as in Bob’s lists combined with a request for early Italian Wars.

Voting is going in favour of tight themes with clearly defined and limited parameters. I have one vote in favour of two 25mm sessions.

Another vote for 3x15mm and 2x25mm rounds. Also a liking for tight themes, probably geographical but with narrow time periods.

Also a suggestion of using each of the army list books as the theme for a round. This is new, so any comments on this?

A trial run, one of the events next year, has been suggested for the army list idea. I guess that should be 15mm for maximum flexibility.

Any more thoughts before I assemble a proposal to put to the group on Sunday 14th?

We shall need to make a decision in principle then with details to be discussed and tweaked in October, so that I can get dates set up with the Village Hall in early November.

I see you just sent OWS club dates around to the Oxford members - can we deduce the FOG-R dates for the Sunday from that list?

thanks

All,

discussions at the event yesterday have confirmed the details in my posting of 10th September with one change; the Army List book used for one of the 15mm events (to test whether the approach of using the books to define the theme works) will be Cities of Gold.

Dates are currently under negotiation with the Hall and so details of actual event dates should follow in October.

On that basis should I understand that "Cities of Gold" replaces the "Wars of Religion" round?

So, if I also understand Bob's proposal for the Not Godendag FOG-R event in Daventry in Jan, and the change to this one at Wolvercote, we will have 2 x Cities of Gold competitions to kick off next year?
