Re: TDC VIII Dark Ages - Results
Division C
excubitor Byzantine 600-649 AD - vs - Ironclad French 888-1049 AD and Viking 790
excubitor won 48-18
Bizantines formed a wide front covering most of the initial set-up area with the bulk of their cavalry on their left.
The French started with a narrower formation, spreading along half the initial setup area, with a huge elite cavalry force taking up their right side (twice the size of the opposite Byzantine cavalry) and a smaller infantry force on their left side, opposite the Byzantine front.
The Byzantines feared that the French cavalry would easily overrun their left side, well before their right side would have engaged the enemy. So they started retreating to delay fighting until infantry reinforcements arrive from their center, and their right side would engage/outflank the enemy infantry. As French cavalry pushed deep into the byzantine side, they were cut off from their infantry. The Byzantine cavalry counter-attacked, picking off exposed cavalry units. just as the Byzantine infantry from the center arrived and formed a new diagonal front that prevented the French cavalry from spreading to its full strength. Fighting was intense, and victory was not easy as French units were very hard to defeat, even while fragmented. In the end, the combined Byzantine infantry and cavalry units managed to defeat many French cavalry units, while the rest of the French army was almost outflanked by the superior in numbers Byzantine units.
A very nice game with a lot of maneuvering; victory was unclear until the very end of the battle.

Div B
grahamed Andalusian (756 - 1049AD) with Spanish (718-899)
defeated
Rob 123 Indian Rajput 650-1049AD
67- 55
Very hard fought game, both armies took a real battering, swung one way then the other, for a while the Indian Elephants looked like they would crush all before them, but (fortunately for me) they got carried away with their success and ran off after fleeing spaniards. Unfortunately for India leaving the villagers to the mercy of the Arab veterans. They did (eventually) come storming back onto the pitch, but before they could crash in for round two the game ended!
Thanks Rob, close one!

Re: TDC VIII Dark Ages - Results
My records show I've lost three games.
Defeated by Triarii 45-17, random27 46-20 and, the one I don't think has been reported, Garokan 47-21.
All have been recorded. Thanks.

Division A
markleslie Khorasanian 821-1003 AD with Dailami 928-1055 AD defeats Morat Frankish 751-887AD with Saxon (Continental) 51-19.
Turn 2
Bloody big hill in the middle pretty much dictates the battle to come.

The Franks eagerly advance, what can the Khorasanians do but open their arms and step in for the embrace.
Turn 9
The centre mostly holds while the arms seal the deal.

Another tough slog versus Heavy infantry and Lancers, fortunately Elephants and flank attacks proved enough.
Salute!

Division C
excubitor (Byzantine 600-649 AD) - vs - ulysisgrunt (Frankish 751-887 AD)
excubitor won: 55-26
A steep hill with rough ground on its plateau dominated the center of the battlefield. A huge forest on the left of the Franks' side provided hiding grounds for their troops, while their right side was a huge, flat valley. The Frank general quickly realized that his army’s lack of light and medium infantry favored the Byzantine army (allowing them to dominate the center of the battlefield). For this reason, the Franks deployed an army comprised mainly of huge numbers of “superior” cavalry and “superior” heavy infantry and no missile units at all. The Byzantine army consisted of cavalry with equal quality but significantly inferior in numbers, a lot of missile units, while the Byzantine infantry had no ‘superior’ units at all. As the Franks massed their elite army on the huge valley on their right, the Byzantines were taken by surprise as they had spread their units along the full extent of their frontline. The Byzantines immediately realized that the Franks would easily smash the Byzantine left and destroy the rest of the Byzantine army piece by piece. To avoid this scenario, the Byzantines decided to reform their frontline to a line vertical to their initial front, hoping that their troops would stand a chance by fighting on the high ground of two small hills. This was a race against the advancing Frank cavalry. The 2 Byz infantry units that did not manage to properly align their front with the hill sides were quickly routed by the French. However, the French infantry did not succeed in breaking more than one infantry unit on the right of the Byzantine army, and they were gradually outflanked and routed by the Byzantine medium infantry and archers. The French cavalry pressed very hard on the Byzantine left, and a couple of cavalry units managed to break through, but the Byzantines managed to stop them before reaching the Byzantine center. As the French lost all but one infantry unit situation became hopeless for them. It was a great game where the final Byzantine victory was clear only during the last two rounds.
