[BnW - Byz vs Ita] 1- Operation Silencer

Post by StuccoFresco »

Hi all, this is the fourth full campaign of my mod (version 3.5: viewtopic.php?t=108116). New version included a new campaign and a new Faction, but this AAR still concerns only Byzantines, Italian and British units.

The Italian invasion of Albania has unfortunately succeeded: despite our steadfast resistance the enemy has broken through the border and secured the land. The Free States are facing an existential threat as the Italians keep pushing and threaten to invade the heartlands: the strongpoints of Arta and Ioannina keep them out, but for how long?

The British Commonwealth has now recovered from the disastrous 1940 Yugoslavian campaign and is striking back. The Lancaster’s warhawks have pushed for an increased support in our favor, but it will take time. For now, we stand alone.

Arta is the first target: the Italians have pushed enough supplies and heavy artillery through the Thermopylae pass and will try to break through. We can’t stop them head on, so we will try a flanking attack to destroy their supply depots, forward airfields and hopefully even their heavy artillery batteries. Without supplies the Italian offensive will be called off, so that’s the main objective.

The mission will be carried out by an ad-hoc Varangian Corps: four brigades from the Kozani Valley. To open the path to the Sykies, however, we have to lure the enemy forward. Which means ceding ground and getting ever closer to Arta itself. I’ll need to manage the mobile forces and carefully control the enemy’s advance so I can reach their supply depots and keep Arta out of their reach.

11-12/1/1942
The enemy bombards the lines of the VII and XXX Thema with all available guns, as well as shelling our already weakened bunkers in Polichni. The first assaults starts the second day and see the 107th, 111th and 112th Hoplitai Divisions taking the brunt of the fire. The Italian 8th Centuria “Curtun” leads the charge accompanied by tanks and assault guns. In the north, Polichni falls to the 24° Arditi Brigade.

I ordered the 33rd Koursorses Division to bolster our southern flank’s defenses, but Italian Bombers immediately spotted the formation and bombed my artillery. The 69th and 100th Anachaitistis Wings try to fight off the enemy planes and down around 35 of them. The leading Italian units are closely followed by their HQs so I can’t use my Peltastes Wings to bomb them.

I push forward the 10th Katafraktoi Division between VII and XXX Thema, hoping to find an opening for a counterattack. My tanks shell the leading elements of the 8th “Curtun”, but it’s an even battle.

13/1/1942
Enemy fighter planes try to rush Arta Group’s airfield, but the 44th Anachaitistis Wing stops them. A Regiment of the 5th Clibanarii Division, meanwhile, has advanced too far from his HQ’s AA range, so I pummel it with my Peltastes Wings until more than 60 tanks are turned into wrecks.

The Italian I Corpo D’Assalto keeps advancing south of Kilkis decimating the 107th and 112th Hoplitai Division. North of the town my 10th Katafraktoi pushes back the 8th “Curtun” Division. Our Interceptors decimate the 19th Stormo Bombardieri that was supporting the enemy’s advance, but I predict that soon enough the enemy vanguards will reach my 33rd Koursorses Division’s blocking positions.

The Italian IV Coorte in the north is slowly advancing toward Oraiokastro, but the town and the nearby town of Peraia are well defended.

14/1/1942
The 12th “Fufluna” Division approaches the 33rd Koursorses Division’s positions so I shell it with artillery, bomb it from the air and finally attack it with my 10th Katafraktoi Division. The enemy Centuria Regiment cracks under the pressure and is almost destroyed.

Our vast minefields are preventing the IV Coorte from flanking Oraiokastro from the north. The mass of Italian troops is lumbering forward, but our frontline Thema are resisting.

15/1/1942
The Italian 5th Clibanarii Division strikes at the one Regiment of the 10th Katafraktoi that was outside of AT Guns’ cover and shatters it. I retreat the Division north of Kilkis and try to stem the advance of the 33rd Arditi Brigade and, again, of the 8th “Curtun” Division. The attacks are preceded by aerial attacks on the enemy assault guns, but the battle is still inconclusive. Dozens of the “Curtun”’s APCs and IFVs are destroyed, however.

In the south, the enemy breaks through the ranks of 108th Hoplitai Division and wipes out my artillery, leaving the 33rd Koursorses Division exposed. I have to retreat to a more defensible position further west.

Most of my planes are sent back to the airfields to reorganize and resupply.

The Varangian Thema has arrived! Four Brigades and their HQ. I march them forward, but not too much. The enemy must advance further, otherwise it will quickly fall back on us when we threaten Sykies. Enemy heavy artillery is also still in range of the town so it would devastate our Varangian Brigades if they advance too far too early.

The 44th Anachaitistis Wing is jumped on by two enemy Fighter Wings and it’s decimated while protecting a Peltastes Wing. The enemy air power is oppressing.

Kilkis is almost surrounded and the 10th Katafraktoi Division suffers heavy losses trying to hold its positions. I retreat it toward Peraia and patch it up a bit. The VII Thema is still holding the line, but II Coorte’s and I Coorte d’Assalto’s advance in the south may end up threatening Arta despite Oraiokastro and Peraia’s resistance.

17/1/1942
The Italian I Coorte d’Assalto lunges forward and engages the V Thema, breaking through the first line held by the 53rd Hoplitai Division. I send the 33rd Koursorses Division under my control to counterattack the enemy HQ Battalion that advanced way too far, destroying it and cutting off the 25° Brigata Arditi as well as a Centuria Regiment. It’s a risky move, but HQs give big bonuses to every unit in a radius, and cutting off those heavy hitters for even a single turn is nothing to scoff at. Unfortunately, it’s likely the 33rd Koursorses will be wrecked now that it’s in open terrain…

Kiklis is surrounded and there is a torrent of Italian units moving west. To make the matter worse, the Italians are sending even more planes into battle, with a Fighter Wing attacking the 4th Peltastes Wing right after takeoff at Arta. The assault against the VII Thema is intensifying, supported by a hundred additional bombers.

I decide to wait one more day before advancing on the town of Vari with my Varangian Brigades.

As expected, the 33rd Koursorses has lost two Regiments to the enemy’s counterattack, but their advance has stalled for a full day so it was worth it. In the north, the 10th Katafraktoi Division is finally rested and pushes back a Reggimento Motorizzato with heavy losses. The enemy’s 24° Brigata Arditi has reached the outskirts of Peraia. In the far north, Italian units seem to have flanked our minefields.

Enemy bomber squadrons pummel the VII Thema; they are escorted by hundreds of Fighters so I can’t touch them. I choose to bomb the 24° Arditi to slow its advance.

Meanwhile, the Varangian Thema thoroughly defeats the Italian 41st Limitanei Division and conquers Vari.

19/1/1942
Recon shows enemy heavy artillery still in range of Sykies… The Varangians are pushing the remnants of 41st Limitanei further north, but it’s still too early to attack our primary objective.

The enemy has stopped pushing against the V Thema, it’s safe to assume it’s turning south and trying a wider flanking move. Kilkis has fallen, so the enemy’s heavy artillery should start advancing west.

In the north, the Italian offensive is slowly dismantling the VII Thema. I strike at the II Coorte’s HQ Battalion with the Katafraktoi and a Regiment of the 32nd Koursorses Division, shattering it. Another HQ down means a less efficient Italian offensive, it’s a considerable success.

20/1/1942
The VII Thema is crumbling and despite still having air support my 10th Katafraktoi is starting to withdraw. I have to send a Regiment of the 32nd Koursorses Division at Oraiokastro because an Italian Limitanei Regiment is wading the river just west of it and threatening VII Thema’s HQ.

The V Thema is under attack again, but my Koursorses Regiments and their assigned Artillery Regiment are keeping things under control for now.

The Varangians liquidate the remnants of the Italian Limitanei and advance east of Sykies. Behind them, the 140th Hoplitai Division moves forward to secure the supply lines. Only a single Heavy Artillery Regiment is in range of Sykies now.

21/1/1942
Well I DEFINITELY didn’t expect a Clibanarii Regiment to get back all the way to Vari and ruin my plans. Instead of advancing against Sykies I have to pull back three Brigades to surround and deal with the Italian armored troops. I hope this doesn’t ring a huge bell to the rest of the Italian Legion and I can still aim for the objective.

The rest of the front is stalling the enemy advance: losses are high but the enemy is not breaking through anywhere.

22/1/1942
The enemy heavy guns are now in range of Peraia and my 10th Katafraktoi Division, so it’s time to pull back. More air attacks above Arta are decimating my Peltastes Wings, but I still venture forward to hit the enemy armor whenever I can. My Interceptors downs dozens of enemy bombers.

The enemy renews its assaults against the V Thema; the 12th “Fufluna” Division is advancing right behind the vanguards. The VII Thema is almost done for, but the strongpoints at Peraia and Oraiokastro are still holding.

The 140th Hoplitai Division finishes off the enemy armor at Vari, so I can unleash the Varangians against Sykies: it’s defended by the 45th and 53rd Limitanei Divisions supported by the X Legione’s own HQ. The Byzantine elite troops break through the enemy ranks, but can’t reach the town’s outskirts.
Image
23/1/1942
The Italian Engineer Battalions cut paths through our minefields as their heavy artillery starts pummeling Peraia. The 12th “Fufluna” is trying to envelop the southern flank of the V Thema and I only have Koursorses units in the area: a strong mechanized push is way out of their league.

The good news is that the Varangians have broken through the enemy lines and with a determined assault they took Sykies. Their IFVs blasted the defenses, opening the way to a flood of troops that stormed the town center and pushed out the defenders. The town has suffered surprisingly little damage so its buildings will still be useful to parry the eventual counterattack.

The never ending torrent of enemy Fighters have worn down our last Peltaste Wings: only around 20 CAS planes are still operational.

24/1/1942
The conquest of Sykies has put the entire X Legione out of supplies: the Italians try flying even more planes in, but the offensive is already stalling under the weight of the fuel and ammo shortages. Peraia has fallen but Oraiokastro now has a chance of holding. I decide to retreat the 10th Katafraktoi Division further back: I’ll let the Italians run themselves dry rather than fighting them head on.

The V Thema has a chance to survive too: the 12th “Fufluna” needs a lot of fuel for its IFVs and APCs and now it’s running on fumes. My remaining Koursorses units are trying to hold the line, but ceaseless aerial bombings are eating away my artillery support.

Around Sykies, the Varangians are holding off several Limitanei Divisions with ease, pushing their defensive perimeter outward from the town. The X Legione’s HQ has been hit hard, with several high officers captured or killed.
Image
25/1/1942
The battle slows down: the Italians don’t dare to attack without enough supplies, and I can’t counterattack because I’m too weak. The battle rages on around Sykies, but the Varangians aren’t in any real danger.

26-28/1/1942
Desperate for results and knowing the Varangians aren’t going to be pushed off Sykies, the Italians surge forward trying to get to Arta and turn a defeat into a victory. Oraiokastro is almost encircled, the VII Thema all but annihilated; in the south, my Koursorses are trying to hold off the 12th “Fufluna”, but the entire V Thema is feeling the pressure mounting.

On the 28th I start moving two Varangian Brigades toward the Italian air base; destroying it is a secondary objective and I’d like to secure it.
Image
29/1/1942
The Italian air base is destroyed; enemy presence around Sykies is melting away. The Italians are still pushing toward Arta but they don’t seem anywhere close to a breakthrough. Supplies still trickle toward their units preventing a complete collapse, but it seems the offensive has failed. Their brave pilots are still trying to support their troops with dozens of bombing runs every day, but with the loss of the air base they’ll be forced to retreat.
Image
30/1/1942
The V Thema holds the last line of defenses before Arta proper against the last pushes. The Italians are advancing slowly and methodically, but the ammo shortage severely hampers their efforts. My Interceptors are downing the last remaining enemy bombers. Oraiokastro’s garrison still holds its ground: the Italian heavy artillery is out of ammo.

31/1/1942-1/2/1942
I launch a probing attack westward from Sykies and I find two Italian Heavy Artillery batteries near Ki, “guarded” by a Regiment of 5th Clibanarii Division. I decide to give it a try: destroying those heavy guns will ease the pressure in this sector. The enemy armor seems apathetic while I destroy their precious guns, so I send the other two Varangian Brigades northwest to catch the third and final battery.

Oraiokastro has been encircled. I send a Regiment of the 10th Katafraktoi Division south to push back the 12th “Fufluna”.
Image
2-4/2/1942
The hunt for the big guns continues, but the enemy artillerymen have pushed their weapons behind the enemy lines. The concentration of Italian forces is becoming too thick for the tired Varangians, who are already risking overextension and encirclement. With only a few guns escaping my grasp and even my hail-mary air attacks failing, it seems this secondary objective will remain unchecked.

The last Italian attacks are receding, Arta and Oraiokastro are still standing., and the V Thema is still manning the last line of defenses. The battle is over.
