PC2 feedback anomalies

Post by Navodad »

Tech support suggested I post this here
Hi,

I'm not actually experiencing any problems now but have some comments about anomalies in the game if that's ok.
For many years I have hoped someone would put the classic Avalon Hill simulations on PC. Then I found PanzerCorps 2 and it is the closest I have seen that approximates Panzerblitz, PanzerLeader and the others from AH. I have done all the PC2 scenarios and campaigns at Major difficulty (bar one) and some things in the game mechanics don't make much sense to me. Starting with aircraft...there is virtually no difference in range for the various planes despite a vast range difference in reality. I should be able to cover an entire map with a heavy bomber as well as a P51 yet a Spitfire has virtually the same range in PC2. Firing range is a particular bugbear for me with ground units as well. I appreciate that the hex scaling is different from the AH sims but how can an anti air 1/2 track fire at a Lancaster 1000's of feet in the air and several hexes away yet turning it against infantry I have to park next door to the target? Never mind that 1/2 track has a greater range than artillery. Which brings me to artillery and armour firing ranges... Even allowing for hex scaling surely artillery and armour shouldn't have to park adjacent to a target? This ranging issue also distorts terrain effects in the real world. AH had adjustments for elevation differences but it' becomes irrelevant if I have sit beside a target. No hull down or terrain blocking fire aside from a few cases of an escarpment in PC2. Finally my biggest gripe is retreat. Retreat for the enemy invariiably has them running away from danger behind lines. As the attacker my units are almost always moved forward into more dangerous locations causing them to be cut off, surrounded and eliminated within a turn usually. No sane unit in reality having taken a beating then offers itself up for sacrifice. Ok, there is another 'finally'... Having completed the scenarios at Major I tried the next step up to the default difficulty. My word it has proved a big step up. From romping to victories with thousands of prestige left over and elimnating virtually every enemy unit I found it near impossible to even keep my own armies at any level of reinforcment. After a couple of campaign scenario successes my army would invariably be too weak to get through the next one. I can't imagine how difficult the higher levels of dificulty are.
Oh and the Escape to NY scenario is just too far fetched that I think it spoils the rest.
Aside frrom these quibbles I will say I do enoy PC2 a great deal but wish it had these inconsistencies removed if possible.
