A battle of attrition in the open. Just managed to prevail after losing a more comfortable cushion in the last few turns, which had me sweating a bit.

Division C

vakarr Bithynian 297-74 BC with Galatian 280-63 BC Allies
defeats rockmanbob123 Selecuid 124 -63

Score 55-64

A very hard fought game, where both side's right flanks collapsed. The Seleucid right flank was stronger, being made up of cataphracts and the like, and took much longer to go down. It took up to four Bithyian units to defeat each cataphract unit. As a result, the Seleucid position looked stronger for most of the game. In the centre, there was a hill that was fought over by the warbands, medium infantry and pikemen over and over again. There was one combat where pikemen and warbands fought toe to toe for turn after turn, and the pikemen rallied on the second last turn. Meanwhile the Seleucid infantry from their left flank had begun to arrive (there was nothing Bithynian left to oppose them on that flank) and were making their presence felt. The score was 55-58 in the Bithynians favour. It looked like the Seleucids would win on the following turn when suddenly, the pikemen auto-broke and the game was over.

Thanks for the game. The Franks have a good army that will cause some upsets.

Division C

Chris Townsend's Spanish 900 (w/Andalusian allies) defeats Ironclad's French 888 with Viking 790 allies 60 to 45.

The Time and Geography match-up would use a later version of the Viking allies for the French, so this was a little tricky to set up, as I could choose the Spanish, but the Viking 790 allies disappeared as soon as I chose my allies! In the end, it was my Andalusian allies that won the battle, so it was important to get it right!

The terrain was somewhat narrowed, especially on the Frankish side, by mountains, so the Franks were able to deploy compactly with heavy infantry in the centre, a strong cavalry force on the open right flank, and bowmen and, importantly, their berserker behind the rough terrain to the centre right. The Spanish deployed a similar size force of lancers behind a line of irregulars and bowmen opposite the aforementioned rough terrain, and a smaller force of Andalusian infantry and cavalry on a hill almost opposite the mountains.

So there were basically four smaller battles. On the Spanish left, their cavalry, despite some small successes, was outmaneuvered and out fought (including a dismal showing in the clash of the light javelin horse) by their Frankish counterparts. On the rough terrain, the Frankish bowmen, with the help of those berserkers, eventually prevailed, though there were losses to both sides. In the centre, a few spare lancers (fortuitously assigned to the infantry commander) supported the shield wall and, with the aid of skirmishers and bowmen, essentially fought to a draw.

In the meantime, the Andalusians made an almost unopposed flank march, and fell upon the Frankish centre troops, crushing their resistance with only the loss of their light horse, more than compensating for the Spanish losses elsewhere.

A tough fight, and a good game.

Div C

excubitor (Byzantine 600-649) - vs - Indibil (Dailami 928-1055 AD with allies Armenian 885-1045)

excubitor won 46 - 21

Byzantines started by concentrating most of their infantry and cavalry on the small heights on their left and tried to outflank the Dailami right. Dailami responded by moving their forces to their right to face the Byzantine move. On the other side, both armies placed mainly cavalry units. The Byzantines managed to capture a small hill in the middle of the initial frontlines. Then Dailami turned all their cavalry from their left towards their right, a move that they decided to cancel on just the next move as they re-oriented their cavalry on their left to face again towards the Byzantine right. This back and forth of the Dailami cavalry cost them 2 turns. This was enough time for the Byzantine cavalry to capture a small hill on the left of the Dailami and dominate half the frontline thereafter. Dailami, on their right side, managed to stop the Byzantine outflanking maneuver and rout most of the troops. However, a suicidal charge of Byzantine cavalry against Dailami's superior missile troops ended by routing the core of Dailami's archers before unloading all their arrows, at a cost of only two Byzantine cavalry units. Finally, the Byzantine cavalry arriving from their right helped collapse the Dailami's infantry line, which was already under heavy pressure from the superior Byzantine infantry.

It was a very nice game with a lot of maneuvering, where both sides won small victories, but terrain gains proved to be the key to the victory.

I had the honor and privilege of beating Rob123 63-39 with my Franks versus his Indians

Managed to pin a flank and delay him on the flank I lost, the result was closer than the score, as his elephants still standing could have turned the tide if they managed to converge on his struggling center.

Division C

vakarr Bithynian 297-74 BC with Galatian 280-63 BC Allies defeats
Ironclad Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 218-217

Score: 55-64

Ironclad played skilfully and the result was in doubt right up to the end, with the score often in the Carthaginians' favour. The trouble for the Bithynians began when the line of light troops clashed, with the Bithynian peltasts assuming they would win. However, a Thracian peltast unit became fragmented and bounced off on it's first charge against an ordinary light javelin unit. This messed up the Bithynian line and the Carthaginians quickly exploited the gap, as well as mistakes in the Bithynian deployment. The Bithynians hid most of their army in hills and woods and deployed well back, giving them a cavalry superiority on their right flank. However the Carthaginians responded by moving their cavalry to their other flank, which they were able to do as the Bithynian army was slowly moving up over the hills. Finally there was a clash of warbands in the centre, with elephants and cavalry on one flank, and medium foot on the other. The superior warbands eventually won their fights but were often taken in flank afterwards. There was one particular clash between an elephant and warband unit, next to a Celtic chariot and heavy cavalry unit, that went for almost the entire game, with the Carthaginians fighting uphill but otherwise fighting hard and often winning. It was this group that finally routed and (combined with some Bithynian rallies) lost the game.

Division A

Chris Townsend's Dailami 1056 have successfully applied for a chance to show off their wares to ulysisgrunt's Florentine 1424 army. I have heard that the Florentine is always in need of good mercenaries, and we are hoping for good (aka bad) terrain to really show how well we fight.
