alexmike1 Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 216-203 + Samnite 355-272 allies beat Captainwaltersavage Macedonian 320-261 63-37

Big cavalry melee on the Carthaginian right in which the Punic cavalry held on long enough for the massed infantry on the left to find the flanks of the big, scary, pike block. GG.

Hard fought game. Survived the impact phases of the mighty Samnites and my pikes held my line. Thanks for the game.

Division C

Ironclad Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 218-217 BC defeated devoncop Samnite 355-272 BC and Gallic allies 61-43

A thoroughly enjoyable hard fought battle in which the gods of war favoured the Punic forces. This saw the Carthaginian Gallic infantry swiftly destroying the enemy centre as fighting began in earnest. The Samnites fought back to narrow the gap and in the process eventually destroyed three of the four enemy elephant units but the Carthaginian held onto their lead for final victory. Thanks for the game.

Division C

devoncop (Samnite 355) beat vakarr (Bithynian 297-74 with Galatian Allies)

Score 64-44

Tournament score .........devoncop: 60pts +20 points = 80 points
vakarr = 44 pts

Heck of a hard fought battle where my beat up Samnites finally scraped a win despite the heroic performance of the Galation Superior warbands.

Thanks to a fine opponent for the game.

A thoroughly undeserved victory for me. It was a very close match and could have gone either way. I had a slight edge as the phalanxes and warbands of the Macedonians where chewing through the Carthaginians. Then I was flanked and it was looking very bad for me. Three rallies of routing infantry in the same turn (and another a couple of turns before) turned a likely defeat into a sudden win. Having been victim to the constant rallying of another opponent I feel balance is restored to the universe.

SimonLancaster (Spartan 221 BC + Roman) defeated Ironclad (Hannibal in Italy: Carthaginian 218 BC) 56-23.

The armies clashed and I managed to keep his elephants and cavalry quiet. Carthaginian armies are always well balanced and I am sure Ironclad's army will cause some problems further down the road.. Thanks for the game.

Division C

Ironclad Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 218-217 BC defeated Chris Townsend Pergamene 262-191 BC 61-57

A close battle which the Carthaginians were lucky to come out on top. The Pergamenes superior deployment enabled them on their left wing to swiftly crush weaker opposition with their concentrated cavalry. In contrast the main Carthaginian cavalry force deployed on the other flank was nullified by strong enemy infantry formations.

The Pergamenes pushed on and their ultimate success looked certain. However the retreating Carthaginian cavalry and recovering elephants outdistancing their pursuers were able to concentrate against the more exposed mounted enemy, victorious engagements which together with some accompanying successful infantry actions led to the surprising battle outcome. Thanks Chris for a great game.

Very close battle on an open plain. The Roman infantry were deadly on the attack and resilient in defence. The Macedonian cavalry tipped the balance and the day was almost over when the Romans finally succumbed. An excellent match up - very well balanced.

Division C

Vakarr Bithynian defeated Chris Townsend Pergamene 9-43
The Bithynians weighted their right flank, where there was a hill on the Pergamene side of the table. The hill and the extra troops eventually resulted in the left wing Pergamene forces being wiped out, despite a breakthrough into the Bithynian rear by two Pergamne cavalry units.

Meanwhile, the superior warbands clashed with the Pergamene centre but they had to fight through clouds of Pergamne skirmishers to get there, so were somewhat depleted when they charged the main Pergamene line, and the results went both ways. On the Bithynian left flank, the Pergame cavalry won the cavalry engagements and the Bithynians had great trouble holding back the Pergamene horde. That flank would have been lost by the Bithynians if the game had gone another turn.

However, the Pergamene left flank losses and the loss of some of their units in the centre was enough to end the game.

A fairly open battlefield divided by a stream provided enough interest to get both armies trying to outflank on their left side. The Macedonians had to spread their line to counter the advancing Samnites with their allied warbands. The battles on the flanks went well for the Macedonians allowing the Samnites to crash through the centre of the Macedonian defensive line. Their eagerness for battle was the downfall for the Samnites as their Gallic allies charges after their defeated enemies. Enough victories elsewhere and the stalwart defence by the commander in chief and his phalanx, when assailed form all sides, was enough to tip the balance.

Captainwaltersavage Macedonian 320-261

defeats

lunecastle Lysimachid 320-281 BC and Seleucid 302

47:10

Hills on the left and centre and a wide open battlefield on the right made for some difficult decisions. I decided to push on my left and bulk up the attack over rough ground with some thorakitai and some phalanxes. hoping the phalanxes would not get zoned out on the plentiful rough ground. The Lysimachids brought a huge number of skirmishers and enough infantry to hold a standard attack. My overwhelming numbers even allowed some lancers to charge through his ranks and disrupt his defence. In the centre it was very even and might have gone either way. on the right I was seriously outnumbered and had to send over my elephant and a couple of thureophoroi to try and shore up my line against the enemy elephant and supporting cavalry. My much smaller number of cavalry had to do a lot of running away behind a convenient lake to just survive. The lysimachids surged through my centre pushing back my front line of inferior troops. Luckily my victorious lancers from the left flank were perfectly placed to flank them as were some other medium spears. On the right the elephants clashed and My Nellie had obviously been training hard and shattered the Lysimachid Elephants in short order. In the ensuing chaos the Lysimachid centre collapsed and it was game over.

Rough hilly terrain gave the Lusitanians the advantage over the Macedonian forces. Sertorious's legionnaires and cavalry held tied down the Macedonian phalanxes on the left flank in a positional duel while the Heavy Caetrati smashed through the Thureophoroi and Thracians.

Ironclad Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 281-217 BC defeated mcfcivo Graeco-Bactrian 259-130 BC and Saka 300 BC-50 AD allies 43-14

The Graeco-Bactrian cavalry soon established a superiority over their mounted opponents who managed to to hang on whilst the infantry action progressed. With mixed fortunes for the opposing elephants the Carthaginian Spanish and Gallic infantry with their greater numbers eventually overcame their opposition for a decisive victory. Good game, thanks.
