Ligurian Allies?

Post by Jungle_Rhino »

The Gallic army can take a Ligurian Allied contingent of Average Prot MF Light Spear for 5pts each.

Question I have is why?? They strike me as terrible troops when you can get the same with Impact Foot/Sword for 7pts

I appreciate they are about the cheapest rear support going, and they aren't shock so they won't run out of their nice patch of rough going into silly situations, but should rubbish troops like this really be paying an extra point for Light Spear?

Leads on to the general design question of why it costs the same to equip Poor quality troops with weapons as Elite quality troops? Is this built in to the grading system - but then troops with no weapons are not pointed correctly relative to each other. I suppose the idea is that it is near enough and all balances out in the end? Just seems this points system lends itself to 'meta-gaming'.

Anyhow I'm tempted to take some Ligurians for the reasons mentioned above - I'm going the straight heavy foot option and want some medium foot in my army but as the author points out the 'Hill tribes' sound like a pretty dubious excuse for some rough terrain troops (Although I do appreciate that Gallic foot probably didn't have much of a problem in the rough so it makes sense) - brings us back around to the whole mythical medium foot argument I suppose... :D

Nor will MF Impact foot. They don't have to test to charge if they are in rough and their charge would take them out of it.

Hmmm, not making the case for the Ligurians any stronger...

Thankyou for the feedback though it's easy to miss rules like that one!

To address your original question, as you suppose, MF light spear are not much good. Normally the only reason you would take them is if they are the only rough terrain troops available (or if you only have enough points to spare for a BG of these). So in the case of the Gallic army, I would take a hill tribe ally rather than ligurians.

The army is base on a historical one - the troop types and lists (sometimes unfortunately) haven't all been invented to be useful !

I'm not an expert of such people, but IMO ligurian warriors were better than that depicted by FoG army list.
