Various map errors in spelling, cultural and religious distribution at game start

Post by Mordkalb »

I realize that these are not high priority issues, but I find them consistently annoying and they do detract from enjoyment of an otherwise excellent game. I hope that now, with the DLC released and two patches ironing out immediate issues, these fixes can be included in the next patch.

Spelling errors:

Wurzburg → Würzburg
Triers → Trier (both city and region)
Koln → Köln
Munster → Münster
Slevsig → Slesvig
Lubeck → Lübeck (both city and region)
Munich → München
Pssau → Passau
Lahbah → Laibach/Ljubljana (depending on whether you want to use the German or Slovene name)
Rugen → Rügen
Gyor → Györ (both city and region)
Kolozvar → Koloszvar (both city and region)
Messembria → Mesembria (both city and region)
Boulgaria → Bulgaria (domain)
Ninzi Novgorod → Nizhny Novgorod (both city and region)
Transylvania → Transsylvania (domain)
Londres → London
Nurnberg → Nürnberg
Tharnow → Tarnow (both city and region)
Zurich → Zürich
Brunswick → Braunschweig

Historical errors in names:

The region and city called „Villen“ in game isn't a real name. The region should be Tirol (although the Duchy of the same name was not established yet at game start, it was known by that name for almost the entire game period). The city should be either Imst, Brixlegg or Kufstein, as today's capital Innsbruck hasn't been founded yet.

The domain called „Billungs“ in game is also not a real toponym. This is like calling Ile-de-France „Merovingians“. The existence of the so called March of the Billungs as a contiguous territorial unit is strongly disputed by contemporary research, and besides, it is a family name, not a place name. A possible replacement would be Mecklenburg.

Although the March of Carinthia was at the height of its power at game start, it never reached the size the current domain of Carinthia has in the game. Vienna never was a part of it. I suggest Austria as a name – although the rise of the Duchy and later Archduchy happened later within the game's timeframe, it did control all of the lands in the domain and is better recognizable by players.

The domain of Friesland is far larger than the areas historically inhabited by Frisians. A possible neutral and recognizable name would be “Lowlands”.

The region of Trieste should be renamed Istria, only the city should keep the name.

Inaccuracies in cultural and religious distribution:

The domain of West Country in southwestern England was Cornish-speaking until the 17th century. Since adding an entirely new culture is time consuming, I suggest switching the population to Welsh or Breton, as they are both related Celtic languages.

The Dutch language area was larger in the 11th century. The current ingame distribution is accurate for modern day, but not for the past. The regions of Calais, Antwerp, Gelre and Holland should be Flemish (and Flemish perhaps renamed Dutch), while Friesland, Bremen and Slesvig should have at least a part of the peasant population Frisian.

The Obotrites were a confederation of largely pagan tribes, but with a Catholic ruler in 1054, which is accurately represented ingame. They were, however, not Anglo-Saxon in culture, but West Slavic.

The Bavarian/German settlement to the east was largely finished in 1054, so Vienna was at the time definitely not Slavic in culture. It should be German, with one or two Jewish freeman pops to represent the urban merchant community, one of Europe's largest in the period.

The Slovenes should be South Slavic, not West Slavic. The regions of Villach, Friesach, Pitten and Laibach should have a German aristocracy, clergy and burgher (freemen) population, but South Slavic peasants. Also, the regions of Aquileia and Trieste should have at least some South Slavic peasants. The Duchy of Carinthia and the Carniolan March should have German as their state culture, not West Slavic.

Dalmatic culture should be renamed Croatian, since Dalmatic in the period refers to the Romance speaking remnants of the Latin coastal peoples, not the Slavs.

The population of the domains of Wallachia and Moldavia should be Orthodox Vlach (the period-appropriate term for proto-Romanians), not Pagan Turkish. The Pechenegs should be a minority at best in these lands, to facilitate the collapse of their polity as happened historically in 1091.

Tiflis, despite a sustained period of Muslim rule, was still a largely Georgian city and definitely not 100% Mashreq Sunni.

Sicily being unowned and 100% “Multinational” and Sunni is an acceptable placeholder, but it shouldn't stay that way. The Emirate of Sicily had its own Taifa period starting in 1053, just one year before game start. These Taifa states should be represented, with the Emirate of Sicily as a reformable country just like Al-Andalus. The population should consist of a Berber Sunni noble and clerical elite, some Latin Jewish freemen to represent urban middle classes and a mixture of Latin Orthodox, Berber Sunni and Greek Orthodox peasants.

The state and population of Oman is currently just "Muslim", without a qualifier. This should be changed to Ibadi Muslim, and some pops in the domains of Mzab, Djerid, Sindh, Khorasan as well as the region of Djerba in Ifriqiya should be switched to Ibadi Muslim.

The German dialect situation is a mess, but I'm making a separate thread about that one...

Ouch. It's a lot of work here, and no, we are not in a lull! We will see what we can do though...

I know it's a lot - how difficult is it? If it's just a matter of editing text files, I can try modding it for my own copy and send you the files once I'm happy with the results.

We will handle on our side, progressively and partially. Because unless you want to stick around a few months, it will be faster for us to do it in a certain way. And there are some limitations like about defined religions we don't want to change for now.
