Update V1.05.21 problem

Post by Delbruck »

I was trying to update FoG Medieval on one of my computers.
I received the following message from Norton:

We have blocked FOG2 Medieval update comp v1.05 because it was infected with IDP.Generic.

Therefore, FOG2 Medieval is no longer available to launch/use.

It's a false positive from their heuristic AV system. We do send out the EXEs for AV firms to whitelist, but it can take some time to filter through to the installed versions.

Not being a techie it's not clear to me what you are saying.

One thing that comes to mind:
I did download the update on another computer when it was initially released, without a problem. This other computer also had Norton.

They have a system which looks at EXEs and tries to 'guess' whether it might be an (as yet unknown) virus. Pretty much anything that has components in it that allow internet connections are going to be flagged.

We send the EXEs we build and update to their whitelist portals (which allow us to provide them with the EXEs so they can flag them as being fine) - but it takes time for it to all get processed.

Fundamentally - the EXE is safe (assuming that your other, intermediate, machine hasn't added a virus to it - but given it would have been in the zip on that machine, it seems unlikely).
