Frontlines: Cyrenaica - Action at Mechili

Hero:

Image
Looks like in the British campaign the Vigilant heroes are given out almost as often as Provocator. At least this time it was combined with less powerful other abilities. My Cruiser tanks could use this hero to access all sort of vulnerable targets and still b able to fall back to formation.

Image
This hero is just silly, three top-tier abilities on a single unit? I assigned him to the Humber AC regiment to not go too crazy with the power level.

New Units Commissioned:

3rd Armoured Car Rgt., RAC - OS11 - Morris CS9 LAC

Since the air force had to be benched this time, I got one more recon car unit. This early in the war recon cars are still valid against enemy armor and their mobility in the desert is a major advantage.

New Equipment Provided:

1st Medium Regiment, RA - BL 4.5 inch (Bren Carrier)

I gave this artillery Bren Carrier transports as I finally had core slots to spare.

Highlights

Image
I moved most of my army directly west to block roads and to fight any Italians encountered, preventing a flanking attack on my bridge engineers.

Image
A much smaller force served as an escort for the engineering units. They moved northwest, the shortest route possible due to lack of truck transports.

Image
First enemies found and stopped. I took my time and did not push west too aggressively, as my position was well defended by rough desert an other terrain features.

Image
When the army reached Mechili, it effectively blocked the Italian capability to counterattack. I slowly begun to target enemy tanks as required by the mission objectives.

Image
Engineers and their escorts reached the road to Derna. It was guarded of course, but not by forces strong enough to be any major threat.

Image
Enemy tanks kept running into support fire, be it due to Provocator heroes or simply bad weather obscuring visibility.

Image
It turned out that Italians did have a surprise in store, as some of their forces attacked north of Mechili, using their own bridge engineers to cross the river. This was unexpected, but since at this point the core of their army has already been defeated, it contributed nothing to the overall situation.

Summary

Final Prestige: 13097 (down 190)

Overall

Some prestige lost this time mostly since I did not have many opportunities for capturing units or locations. The map made most combat encounters about destroying Italian units directly rather than attempting to encircle them, so the gains per turn never quite covered the losses taken here and there. The attack on Mechili wasn't too complicated, but the enemies hidden behind the river and using bridge engineers to cross it for a counterattack were a really nice touch and could punish anyone feeling overconfident. Escorting bridge engineers was a bit of a hassle mostly due to their slow movement speed without transports. It forced me to think very carefully about their placement to not only protect them from attacks, but also to not have them block their own paths given how narrow passages through the desert were.

Frontlines: Cyrenaica - Passing Derna

Hero:

Image
Third Vigilant hero, sigh... Once again I can only encourage more variety in abilities given to the player. If repeatable options appear by chance, then it is fine, but if they are added by default so often, then it seems the designers are trying to railroad the player into a specific style of gameplay. I can still live with it, but never before in any DLC was this the case. This hero got assigned to Wasp MkIIC tanks by the way.

Highlights

Image
I sent some forces west from Umm al Rizam, mostly focusing on lighter units less useful in close terrain or simply those that could exploit their better mobility in the open.

Image
Bridge engineers and slower, more sturdy units approached from the south directly with the goal of clearing the mountain minefields.

Image
I diverted some of my southern forces to encircle Martuba and get access to a forward airfield that would be invaluable for securing my advance.

Image
Meanwhile in the south my infantry reached Italian positions and started to cross the river. While enemy presence was not strong, I proceeded carefully, wary of camouflaged Ascari del Cielo and other such threats.

Image
Moving northwest from Martuba I encountered a surprising number of enemy tanks. Fortunately I also had all my portee vehicles in the area, since they were not suitable for combat in the mountains and had to take the main road. Since Italian planes have been dealt with, they would operate in AT mode and my own air force could fully focus on bombing runs.

Image
With Derna encircled, I now only required some time to suppress the defenders and could focus on clearing out remaining mines.

Image
Some enemies were still hidden near Ayn Marrah, but these were just isolated pockets of resistance without heavy equipment and not organized enough to be able to coordinate their efforts.

Summary

Final Prestige: 13706 (up 500)

Overall

I preferred this scenario from the British side over the Italian one, but only since I did not have to deal with multiple infantry units that had surrender-enabling heroes. This helped with the mission being all about planning and splitting the forces well. Advancing from the rivers down south using bridge engineers might be tempting, but in reality there is very little room there and the pace would be painfully slow. It was still worth sending some units from this direction to focus on minefield clearing, but using it for the main advance would probably not work well. Just going along Via Balbia was the much quicker choice and if things were to stall in the south, I could have always diverted more troops west after getting to Derna. Overall, this was an enjoyable mission and hopefully the bonus objective that reduces the number of mines in the next scenario will make a difference worth the trouble.

Highlights

Image
Once again I split my forces into two groups. One would go west though the desert form Mechili to try and bypass the narrow mountain paths.

Image
The second would move from Derna and Martuba and push directly though enemy fortified positions.

Image
First combat encounters in the north went well. I was able to dispose of Italian forces along Via Balbia, but progress was slower than I hoped for. Rough terrain and numerous minefields were all affecting my ability to move faster.

Image
Meanwhile, the desert path was equally cumbersome. Full of dunes, rough desert, mines and other obstacles, it was tricky to navigate and thus I was once again loosing precious time.

Image
Finally after some ferocious fighting I was able to break through near Tolmeita and Barce, from where the Italians barely had any defenders left. My units were moving rapidly with little thought put to their own safety, as the clock was ticking.

Image
When the northern group joined up with the southern one, victory was finally in sight, but achieved at the very last possible turn. It was really not that easy to cover such a distance quickly!

Summary

Final Prestige: 16468 (up 2862)

Overall

This mission surprised me by how tight the schedule for meeting the main objective is. I played it safe in the first few turns, perhaps too safe and that cost me time I had to then constantly catch up on. Focusing too much on unit safety over objectives meant that I was not hitting the enemy decisively enough. I should have been taking more losses and just rotating out the frontline units to move faster overall. Fortunately once I achieved a breakthrough the remaining enemies were scattered between just a few locations, so my faster units could bypass these places entirely. I wonder how it would have looked like if I hadn't done the bonus objective in the last mission had was forced to face more minefields! That was a really refreshing mission, a reminder that difficulty does not always come directly from the strength of the opponent.

Frontlines: Cyrenaica - Battle of Beda Fomm

Hero:

Image
Nice to finally see a hero from the random pool. A rather useful one as well, assigned to No. 2 (Fighter) Squadron RAF. This will last fust for one mission if the last one does not include any air force as it was in the Italian version, but I still appreciate this option.

Image
Surrender enabler, not really anything fun at this point. Powerful, yet a bit stale given there's already one Overwhelming Attack in the core. Added to 3rd Armoured Car Rgt., for the mobility bonus to initiative.

Highlights

Image
Race to capture the Pimple and Beda Fomm was a really serious thing! I moved some of the faster units in this direction, but they also had to be strong enough to hold that location alone and to not get surrounded by an upcoming Italian advance.

Image
I the meantime, my slower forces attacked Sceleidima. The key was providing AA cover against numerous Italian bombers, as well as counter battery fire to suppress artillery.

Image
Just a very small detachment was sent out in the north to guard the local airfield. It consisted of units capable of providing mutual support fire against both soft and hard targets, plus an auxiliary infantry to block the path. My randomly rolled Artillery Support hero on the Vickers tanks really paid of here.

Image
With Sceleidima secured, I could finally both aid the defense of Beda Fomm, as well as flank the enemy positions from the east, capturing a key airfield.

Image
My positions in the south were attacked several times, but the formation seen here held perfectly fine against any enemy attempts, showcasing the power of Provocator and Camouflage.

Image
My strike west split the remaining Italian forces in half, allowing me to encircle the last remaining groups near Ghemines...

Image
...as well as those northwest of Beda Fomm. Victory was now just a matter of dealing with a few defenseless stragglers.

Summary

Final Prestige: 17619 (up 2044)

Overall

Quite an engaging deployment phase this time, given how there are separate zones for unit placement, each with their own task, but all needed to happen at the same time. In the north, Australians needed some reinforcements and I was not sure if any counterattack would happen against the only airfield. It was imperative it stayed under my control. Race toward Beda Fomm was not not only about speed, but also being able to defend that place, possibly until the very end with little to no reinforcements. Finally, Sceleidima was a well defended target, difficult to approach due to rough terrain and blocking the key path to link up with the rest of my forces. It meant that the most important decisions took place on turn 0, the rest of the mission was then just about carrying out the plan, potentially reacting to any unexpected developments. Ironically if the AI decided to attack north, not south, I would have been in more trouble, so I appreciate the fact it was programmed to do the historical moves.

Frontlines: Cyrenaica - Siege of Jarabub

Hero:

Image
Good, creative use of two traits that do not appear normally on heroes. Bunker Killer also makes sense for this mission. I approve and assign to heavy infantry.

Image
This is also ok-ish, especially since it is just a hero for the last scenario. Clearly meant to help defend a key location, assigned to regular infantry that should help me guard some of the AA guns.

Highlights

Image
I applied have overstrength to most of my units since I had extra core slots and was not able to deploy aircraft. This helped defend the anti-aircraft guns against surprise enemy attacks. Each such location got some additional support from my core force.

Image
1st Field Regiment, RA with all its support abilities was the perfect counter to Italian attacks!

Image
Fast recon cars and commandos also allowed me to rapidly move my support force depending on the situation. The situation did get dire a few times and on of the guns almost got wiped out, getting hit by recon vehicles in succession.

Image
My attack on the main objective was significantly slowed down by Italian 149mm artillery. Fortunately, the infantry units defending it were more than eager to fall into Provocator traps and thus abandoned the allies they were supposed to guard, opening the way for my recon cars and flame tanks to deal with the threat.

Image
I dispatched an elite group to attack the observation posts. I had to proceed carefully here as to not get flanked, but at least I had counter battery fire to help with the 149mm threat.

Image
As I approached Jarabub, the weather worsened significantly, which ironically helped me more than it helped the enemy. I was able to bait the defenders into making suboptimal decisions and thus reduced the risk significantly.

Image
All observation post soon fell and the enemy defense of Jarabub collapsed as well. With that, the British campaign ended. Perhaps not with a bang, but still in a satisfying way.

Summary

Final Prestige: 16871 (down 386)

Overall

A mission as complex as the Italian equivalent, but arguably more difficult due to guarding multiple remote locations, all very vulnerable to the enemy, especially with Poor Ground Control. Two AA batteries barely hold on, but ultimately since the goal was to defend at least four out of six, it would still not have made a difference. Jarabub was really well defended and not being able to rely on planes meant that the right choice would have been giving each group one BL 7.2 inch artillery unit to help clear the way. I settled for just one and did not edit my core, so it was more tricky, but once again the powerful heroes substituted for unit quality perfectly fine and gave me the edge I needed. Once all Italian heavy guns were dealt with the rest of the mission was just an easy cleanup effort.

Thoughts:

Comparing the British and Italian campaigns, the British one was certainly easier, although my prestige situation is quite comparable between them, so it speaks well about the difficulty balance between sides. The British had better equipment, so it would only be natural, but also the heroes they were given seemed on average more impactful (three time Vigilant in a setting with lots of close terrain, wow) and they were not dealing with surrender-enabler units on the opposing side as often. I also preferred what the bonus objectives offered this time, mostly focusing on minor awards and quality of life adjustments. It meant that not completing them would not spiral out of control for a player struggling with the difficulty. For everything else, same flaws and advantages apply. I just saw one scripting issue that denied me one hero, but since these heroes are the "bane" of Cyrenaica's balance and design, I really could not complain. I again liked the use of terrain, the varied objectives that required some foresight and planning, as well as the new units. The DLC clearly needs a small patch to address some bugs and rebalance the heroes, but otherwise is a very satisfying experience. The ability to play the same missions from both sides was quite fun and unique, and the fast this campaign covered a relatively unexplored part of WWII history added to the flavor. It is an improvement over Frontlines - Bulge in almost every way and I just hope any further DLC will continue to improve on the details mentioned by the community. The experience for Frontlines does not need to be identical to Axis Operations or War stories, it can continue its own thing and grow into a respectable DLC series that can stand on its own as a liked piece of content.
