DS Version: How do I switch factions?

Recently bought DS version and the instructions lack detail. As far as I can tell they are the same as those posted for the PC version. I've been playing the Axis, but I can't access the Italians! There's a good chance I am missing something obvious, but I don't think I am going to get very far without challenging in N Africa. Anyone out there able to help?

Ok I've never played this game on anything but a PC but I'm going to hazard a guess on what the problem is!

What date is it? I ask because the Italians will not be on your side (and thus playable) until (IIRC) June 1940 (give or take 1 turn) or until the allies declare war on them....

Once they are in the war then you will be able to select their units etc.....

Yes they are neutral till around 1940. When neutral you can recruit and research but not move.
