Very cool! Another possible list would be a mid-Third Age Gondor list with some Northmen cavalry. Just for doing a North Downs battle, where it's Gondor and High Elves vs Angmar, because for a one on one you can just take Northmen as allies.

This is a good idea. Added to the list, thanks.

Unit Textures Sub-Mod for v1.2

Post by kronenblatt »

I've added some simple unit textures to SnuggleBunnies' excellent Middle Earth Mod v1.2, primarily adjusting colors for Orcs, Uruks, and Trolls units, but also modding some shields for them and other units. Everything else, such as mechanics, staying the same.

To install the mod for custom battles or multiplayer, simply download the mod via THIS LINK and extract into:

or

Some nice stuff there. Uruk-hai bows and swords don't work. Back rank keeps playing the throw pilum animation with a (very loud) sound effect.

Works better than the Assyrians in my view. EDIT: this said, having uploaded a new version of 1.2 (same link as above, i.e., THIS) hopefully deals with the problem.

Have been on a long break from all things FOG and popped in to check stuff out and stumbled on this mod. Nice job guys, the army lists seem varied and interesting, with nice banners. I think you made the right choice on the orcs with the grey green splash, makes them look like orcs!(especially the sea people's model)

Cheers!

Post by SnuggleBunnies »

Update 1.3 is available for download, see OP. This is a minor update -

1) Added Host of the West (Arnor) army list
2) Changed Dunedainic Archers from 54pt Abv Avg Prot Bow Swords -> 51pt Abv Avg Prot Darts, Bow, 50% Swords
3) Ithilien/Northern Rangers were miscosted. Adjusted stats and costs to Abv Avg Lightly Prot Bow, Light Spear, 50% Swords, 41pts
4) Dunedainic Marines model switched from Comitatensis to Auxilia to avoid confusion with the Guard units, which use the Legio Palatina model

...and that's it! Small, but Gondor needed the help. This is probably the last balance/content addition to the mod, but cnzmur is working on a texture set adding custom shield patterns, armor colors, etc., so when he has reached a good stopping point there will be a final cosmetic update to the mod.

thanks for making this. Pretty sure in the book of The Hobbit Dain's Iron Hill Dwarves are described as including some armed with bows.

I believe the Iron Hills Dwarves were uniformly equipped with melee weapons, and it was some of Thorin's companions who used bows, albeit only for (failed attempts at) hunting, and the bows were given to them by Beorn. That said their familiarity suggested that some Dwarves at least use bows, so I gave them some mixed Bow/HW units. It would make sense in context of their stature, mechanical inclinations, and frequency of underground/siege warfare that they used crossbows, but alas there is zero evidence whatsoever for military use of crossbows by anyone in the legendarium.

Yeah maybe I'm misremembering and attributing something from a Middle Earth Roleplay book to The Hobbit.

Is there any chance of a Middle earth mod for Field Of Glory Empires or Field of Glory Kingdoms to go along with this one?

Those are not games I have played, so if so it wouldn't be from me. I also am unsure if map modding is possible for them.

The allies are not meant to be 'historical', but instead everyone gets the maximum 16 choices to allow players to setup interesting combinations. Of course people can choose to stick to plausible allies.

That's very nice: thanks!

Please also tell me that you can also do something about the camel "warg riders". :) Those camels ruin immersion tremendously, much more than e.g. the Assyrians.

No I made them much worse!

They're still obviously camels (I was only doing reskinning, models are beyond me), but now they're camels with a coat of vaguely canine paint. Beats coconuts at least.

I did attempt to figure out how to import models from elsewhere, but it was well beyond my comprehension.
