A second update in 24 hours.
Just over half the round 2 games completed. It sees match 2 over with three big and one narrow margin win for Zhu Que. An excellent performance to move the Chinese team from 3rd place in round 1 to establish a significant round 2 lead in a first place. That lead can only be overhauled in this round if Furor Gallico get a big win in their final game.
So, who might take on the rampant Zhu Que in round 3?
Most likely Furor Gallico (match 1) with one game still underway and just that one good result away from being as strong as Zhu Que and pipping them to top spot at the end of the round. Of course, Third Army could stop this and keep their own position in the top half of the table.
If Furor slip up Herd of Kiwis (match 3) can get close to Zhu Que but would need good wins in all three of their remaining games. Montjoie can prevent this of course and improve their own position substantially.
Both Armchair Heroes (match 4) and Desperta Ferro (match 6) still have the potential to get within a game score of Zhu Que with biggish wins in their remaining games. So, both have an outside chance of being Zhu Que’s next opponents if other results favour them.
Hell on Wheels and Condottieri Italia (match 5) are locked in an epic struggle. Two games with single digit margins of victory declared so far. A pattern that means both teams move up but not enough to challenge the leaders. One of these teams could still surge out of their mutual deadlock by winning the last two games. However, that still would not be enough to challenge the current top two in the next round. They might be relieved they can’t play each other again in this competition.
From match 7 either Charming Champions or Comites Italia can move much further up the table and above the previously fourth placed Boudica’s whose round 2 score is now fixed. None of these teams will be challenging the leaders in round 3.
So there we have it. Half-way through round 2 and Zhu Que pretty much assured of being in first or second place at the end of the round. Mixing it up with them in round 3’s Match 1 will be:-
France’s Furor favourite but also possible for New Zealand’s Kiwis, UK’s Armchairs or Spain’s Ferro? Although one of American Wheels or Italy’s Condottieri could still surge out of their, mutual, Pyrrhic victories neither could be the team to challenge Zhu Que in round 3. That might have to wait to round four.
