Setup suggesting: Adding auto-assign to commanders after selection?

Post by Nijis »

Please ignore if I've missed a function that already does this.

One small part of the game that I find a little tedious is reassigning units to commanders after setup. I'm not aware of any way to do this more efficiently than unit-by-unit.

I'd be happy with an auto-assign button that just uses the existing AI logic. It seems like a relatively inconsequential decision, but the optimizer in me doesn't want to just leave half the army under the command of the two leaders you get at start, especially as one of them is the C-in-C.

Also, is there any reason to have the C-in-C in charge of more than just a single unit, to have as many units as possible subordinate both to the overall commander and one subcommander?

You want the cnc in exclusive charge of zero units in fact, which can be done by shifting him to a unit that is under a subgeneral and then reassigning the unit he was on.

Ah! Didn't think of that. Anyway, it would be nice to assign these fairly low-consequence and somewhat high-effort assignments to an auto-key.

+1, especially if the majority of your units are manueverable - the C-in-C staying out of melee and being the "traffic director" can be critical to exploiting gaps in the enemy line and getting reserve units into flanking positions in the same game turn, using the free 45-degree facing change.

Not in ancient warfare, but it reminds me of Wellington going from infantry square to infantry square during the battle of Waterloo, observing and issuing orders.

With unmanueverable units it's not so important, as they obviously don't get the free facing change. Might as well throw the C-in-C into close combat to get the +50 POA and the morale bonus.
