Regular, Division 2

principesromanes (Anglo-Saxon 600-870 AD) defeats rockmanbob123 (Free Company 1357-1414 AD) 43-11

The Free Company deployed on a strong ridge with men-at-arms backed by longbowmen, expecting the Anglo-Saxons would attack. They foolishly did, only to discover some mounted knights hiding behind the undefended part of the ridge! The infantry lines quickly clashed, on terms that would surly favour the Free Company dismounted men-at-arms in a fair fight. Fortunately, the Anglo-Saxons had numbers. They were able to reposition enough of their forces from the unexpected knights on their right flank to wrap around the softer, juicer, left flank. While it’s a slow grind for the shieldwalls to wear the men-at-arms down in frontal combat, the longbowmen were much less able to stand up to the shieldwalls. And eventually the Anglo-Saxons found enough flanks to exploit and gain the upper hand.

Thanks for the game!

About two weeks to go; make sure you've got your games wrapped by then.

alexhstandish principesromanes Mannaean 1000-751 BC Greek 227-146 BC

principesromanes (Greek 227-146 BC) defeats alexhstandish (Mannaean 1000-751 BC ) 48-17

The Mannaeans benefited from a large hill covered in rocks (rough ground) on their side of the map. The Greeks countered this obvious strongpoint by taking every thureophoroi and light foot they could find, leaving all but one raw phalanx at home. A few cavalry were necessary to counter the anticipated Mannaean chariots.

Faced with the Mannaean forces deployed on the steep hill, the Greeks declined to launch a frontal assault. Instead, they split their army in half, circling around to the narrower sides of the hill in the hope of attacking with less exposure to the Mannaean archers. The weaker Greek flank tempted a large portion of the Mannaean army to march out to engage in the open. The thureophoroi spears were able to hold off the irregular foot and inflict some casualties despite being outnumbered. But while that engagement worked out to a destructive stalemate, the remaining Greeks were able to launch a successful attack on the now less-well defended central hill, essentially encircling the defenders on all sides.

Thanks for the game!

Indibil principesromanes Berber (Marinid) 1244-1319 AD Libyan 650-550 BC

principesromanes (Libyan 650-550 BC) defeats Indibil (Berber (Marinid) 1244-1319 AD) 64-33

Larger enclosures and rough patches dominated the Libyan position, with one flank protected by a (fordable) river and the other flank hemmed in by forest, albeit with some open ground between that forest and the protective enclosures. Against the Berber heavy foot and knights, it was obvious the Libyans would defend in the enclosures and the rough. The plan mostly worked – the Libyans brought enough firepower to win the missile fight over the rough terrain, although slowly and not without losses. The problem was more to do with some Libyan infantry getting caught out moving to the more forward patch of rough and perhaps some of the Libyan swordsmen impact foot being too eager to catch a few vulnerable defensive spearmen out in the open. In the end though, the final phase of the battle involved the Libyans holding the edge of the enclosure – mostly with bowmen – against the Berber Muslim spearmen. While the Verteran Muslim spearmen were able to cut through the bowmen, the remainder of the Muslim spearmen weren’t and were eventually vulnerable to being flanked.

principesromanes (Berber (Marinid) 1244-1319 AD) defeats Indibil (Libyan 650-550 BC) 48-4

Once again, the Libyans settled into the enclosures and rough ground to avoid fighting the Berbers in the open. In this match, however, the Berbers engaged in a wide circle, forcing through the forest (and catching a few light foot hiding there) to approach the enclosures on a narrower front. This allowed the Berbers to concentrate their useful forces (mostly the three units of massed archers and a few light foot) to overwhelm the massed archers in that part of the enclosure. Seeing this engagement going poorly, other Libyans ventured out into the open to assist. That allowed the knights and Muslim defensive spearmen to charge forward, making quick work of the Libyans caught in the open.

Thanks for the games – both of these could very easily have been bloodless draws given the Libyan dominance of the rough terrain and the Berber dominance of open terrain.

Blagrot's games will be all marked as forfeits 4-0 as he's been a no-show.

It was actually a draw at dusk; 22 pt margin isn't a win ;)

Rockmanbob123 German south/east fought AKVGOEBEN Indian (muslims) to an epic draw 62-61

After 24 turns both sides were maimed with Germans holding the field a battle by a hair.

The germans set up their infantry and missiles on a small hill in the center of the field and set a large force of knights to the left. The Indians countered by moving most of their elephants to counter the knights. After a raging fight the indians defeated the grerman nights but not in time to help their comrades attacking the hill, where German arrows decimated and broke the indian foot

An epic draw

And here is the cumulative rankings table after CT8. Initial sorting is based on campaign points, which earned 4 per gold, 2 per silver, 1 per bronze, and 1 per campaign ribbon. Sorting then is by number of medals, ribbons, ELO and finally win%.
Score is the cumulative points, Ave is average score per game

Thanks Karvon for organizing - especially with the need to generate all the random army pairings to make this tournament work. It's a great tournament to try playing armies I wouldn't otherwise take.
