Re: Chaos Tourney VIII Results
Division 1 result.
Stew101's Neapolitans defeat Anderarcos11's Persians.
Score 46- 21 %.
The Persians opted for mainly Horse archers, supported by a few bowmen.
Whilst the Neopolitans went for a mixed bag of LC, crossbowmen, guns and knights, protected by a good number of spear and foot men at arms.
The terrain favoured the Neopolitans, with quite a lot of small areas of broken ground. They were able to use this to advance, by 'island hoping', using each piece of rough as cover for their crossbowmen. Eventually the foot firepower was decisive and their mounted knights dealt with the disordered horse archers.
hanks for the game.

Div 1
Karvon's Greeks defeated Ulysisgrunt's Castilians 49-13.
We deployed our hoplites along the lower gentle slopes of a hill in our center, and extending across a narrow gap to our left to a medium-sized woods. We deployed light along the edges of the woods. On the higher difficult slopes of the central hill, we deployed a loose screen of light foot to secure our right, with some medium foot in reserve on the reverse slopes. A large reserve of hoplites formed up in woods and on the reverse slopes behind the central hill. Our token horse hid behind the woods on our left.
The Castilians sent out a couple of small patrols of light troops, which we easily destroyed with our superior numbers of lights.
Aside from a lone crossbow company, the remainder of the Castilian force was a collection of various grades of knights, ranging from military order to lesser men-at-arms. This mass attempted to blast through our narrow hoplite line, relying on their armor and elan to see them through. While they did have one initial success, seeing off one hoplite on the open ground in the gap, our reserves quickly filled the gap. They found themselves in a grinding fight, mostly uphill. They tried to force their way through to forest, but found our cavalry waiting on the edges and trapped in the trees. Our lights assailed their flanks, further wearing them down. We slowly surrounded and flanked the lead elements, and little by little their force broke down until the whole army collapsed.

Division 2
principesromanes (Armenian 885-1045 AD) defeats duffg (Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 218-217 BC) 41-15
The two armies met in a largely open plain. Which would be more disruptive – Armenian massed archer fire or Spanish scutarii impact charges? In the end, the Armenians were better able to exploit the opportunities that came from the disruptions as both battle lines descended into chaos. The superior Carthaginian cavalry never managed to wrap around the Armenian line.

Alexhstandish (Breton) beat Rockmanbob123 (Georgian) 60:37
Two mass cavalry armies. The Bretons flanked both sides and pushed skirmishers and cavalry through a wood. The Georgians caught and destroyed Breton cavalry in the centre, but the Bretons managed to catch some flanks and take out some archers to secure the win.
Good game thanks Rockmanbob.

alexhstandish principesromanes Mannaean 1000-751 BC Greek 227-146 BC
principesromanes (Mannaean 1000-751 BC) defeats alexhstandish (Greek 227-146 BC) 48-4
The Mannaeans benefited from a large hill covered in rocks (rough ground) on their side of the map. Despite covering it with archers, the Greeks bravely approached the hill, hoping to contest the hill with all the light foot they could muster while the phalanx and and cavalry wrapped around the Mannaean flank. Unfortunately for the Greeks, the Mannaean arrows quickly gave them the edge in the skirmishing fight and some irregular foot charged down off the hill to break the disrupted and fragmented foot in the centre. Meanwhile, the Greek flanks weren’t able to make effective progress as the Mannaean chariots, backed with a few massed archers, checked any progress the Greek cavalry could make.
Thanks for the game – this was definitely an uphill battle (pun intended) for the Greeks!

Stew101 (Arabs) defeats Snugglebunnies (White Sheep Turcoman)
Score 58 - 30%.
The terrain was kind to the Arabs - lots of it, especially rough for the LI.
I went for max light infantry and 1/2 doz medium foot to contest the rough & woods, with lots of cheap Arab cavalry and light cav lancers. These were supported by camels to disorder the Torcoman horse, leaving points for only the mandatory heavy lancers.
SB went with a mix of available troops, with bows and a trebuchet to provide some fire power, backed by horse archers and lancers. He settled in to a defensive position in an enclosure, between two BUA's, with woods on both flanks.m
I was initially concerned that the terrain channeled my attacking options somewhat, but decided to launch virtually my entire combat strength at SB's position in one go. This took a few turns to set up, as my foot had a long way to go to reach the enclosure and the left hand wood. But once there I unleashed my LC lancers to pin stuff in place then followed up with my more numerous cavalry and camels.
SB defended well in the circumstances, chopping up my right flank, but those LC lancers just kept being annoying and stopped him fro exploiting any further opportunity he created on this flank.
Very interesting game, if lacking in sublety of execution.
My thanks to SB for the game.

AKvGoeben principesromanes English (Britain) 1350-1414 AD Ptolemaic 320-218 BC
principesromanes (Ptolemaic 320-218 BC) defeats AkvGoeben (English (Britain) 1350-1414 AD 42-2
The armies met on a narrow plain – a river to the Ptolemaic right. On the Ptolemaic left was a large rough patch, across from a large forest anchoring the opposing English flank. Knowing the English men-at-arms – backed by bowmen – would be a challenge for the phalanx to defeat frontally, the Ptolemaic forces planned on flanking through the forest. Turns out, it was riddled with English bowmen. The Ptolemic forces got the better of the encounter – thanks in part to the superior quality of the Cretan archers. With their flank at risk of being enveloped, the English had no real choice other than to charge and hope to break the pikes before their forces were enveloped. Unfortunately for the English, pikes do not break easily.
Thanks for the game!
