Medium Foot Archers in a LH Army

Post by pcelella »

I'm putting together a Later Lithuanian army, and I have been contemplating experimenting with putting a unit of 8 stands of MF, unprotected bow into it. To do this, I would be eliminating a LH unit. Is this a completely foolish thing to do? Should I skip this unit and stick with the LH? Or if I keep the archers in the list, any thoughts on how to use them?

My first try at a list is:
Later Lithuanian 795 points
1 FC, 3xTC
6x4 LH, Unprotected, Avg, Undrilled, Bow, Light Spear, Sword
3x4 Cv, Protected, Avg, Undrilled, Bow*, Light Spear, Sword
2x4 Cv, Armored, Avg, Undrilled, Bow, Sword
1x4 Kn, Hvy Arm, Superior, Undrilled, Lancer, Sword
1x8 MF, Unprotected, Avg, Undrilled, Bow

I'd love to hear comments. This is my first attempt to run a 'shooty' cavalry army, but I wanted to do something different than all the steppe armies I've recently seen.

Pete,

I've looked at the Liths to see about a viable army too....

why the FC? If as your CnC, then IM his points are wasted. Get another TC and use the 20 points left over for some armor....

If as a subbie for flank marches, then he has his uses....

I'd drop the MF and use the points to get an IC...

+4 PBI plus the umbrella of +2 shielding is much more useful... You want steppes with this army, really don't have a use for the MF.

You are, IMO, attempting to due too much with this army (swiss army knife), when they do one thing really well, have the kniggets for pinning purposes and look to harrass the flanks...

Some armies will do much better at 900 points...

I think this army-type will be one that benefits... If you plan on running this, wait for Fall In, try the 900 point version and then get the MF.

At least that is my paper theory.

Hi Pete,

When I took Scythians against Hal's Sassanids, I found his MF archers to be the vulnerable point I could exploit by just ganging up with enough LH archers. And he had two units of MF, not just one. My suggestion would be first to figure out how you want to use them. If you come up with some good ideas, even if it is just to bait a trap, then include them. If you don't have any real idea then I would leave them out as the points would be better invested elsewhere.

For what it's worth, I did find the Scythian LF archers and slingers to be very useful in the game against Hal's Sassanids. On the other hand all the poor MF with light spear did was guard my camp. But then they were required and cheap enough that I didn't mind the 24 points tied up that way.
