Touhou Project Mod (Version 1.2) - Updated 6/15/24

Post by Rosedelio »

A mod containing armies inspired by Touhou Project. There are 23 army lists, each with a custom banner. Textures are currently vanilla. If you'd like to help with the artistic parts, feel free to contact me. It may take a while for those to be changed by myself, if at all.

The gameplay changes are that Bombs are called "Magic" and have a range of 2. Handguns have a short range of 2 and a long range of 4. Otherwise, it plays like vanilla.

Version 1.2 Changelog
  • Fixed Rabbit Crossbows costing less than they should
  • Reworked fairy heavy foot units. Fairy Spears and Fairy Pikes are now Below Average. Veteran Fairy Pikes and the new Fairy Maid Spears are Above Average. There are no more Raw Fairy Spears or Raw Fairy Pikes
  • Additionally, all fairy units are slightly smaller in model size. This is purely aesthetic and has no effect on gameplay.
  • Oni light foot are now Elite and have Swordsmen. Oni Warriors are now full sized units.
  • Added Fairy Spears to Youkai Revolt
  • Added Minor Youkai to Cirnia
  • Removed the Close Order Jiangshi from the Divine Spirit Mausoleum, to clean up the list a bit. They already have enough heavy foot with the Human Spears.
  • Removed Human Spears from Haniwa army. They still have Armoured Human Spears and Raw Human Spears.
  • Removed the generic fairy units from the Divine Spirit Mausoleum and Animal Realm-related lists
  • Various unit cap adjustments. In general, lists should have less lights than before.
Version 1.1 Changelog
Adjusted points cost to match current patch. This caused the Heavy Cat Carts to drop to 36.
Raw Lunarian Battalions, Lunarian Battalions, and Lunarian Deserters have Darts instead of Light Spear, meaning their costs have increased by 3. Veteran Lunarian Battalions keep Light Spear, but have also increased their cost by 3.
Added new units to Eientei, Divine Spirit Mausoleum, Haniwa, and Youkai Revolt
Various unit cap adjustments
Remade the Myouren Temple, Haniwa, Scarlet Devil Mansion banners. Also adjusted the Tengu banner.
Added Kirisame army.
Most armies now have more allies.

Design notes:

General Mod Lore:
This mod takes heavy inspiration from the Touhou Gensokyo Warfare (TGW) mod for Mount and Blade: Warband. The general setting is that most magic has disappeared and so old-styled armies have formed. The main changes this mod makes to the base game are that Bombs are called “Magic” and have a range of 2, while Handguns have a longer range of 4, with close range shooting at 2. The guns that show up in Touhou are equivalent to modern rifles, so the change is appropriate here. The points cost for these capabilities have been increased accordingly.

Generic Fairy and Youkai Units:
Most armies have generic fairy units because fairies are everywhere. The armies that don’t are much more narrow in determining who is allowed to fight for them. Fairies get javelins and slings because they are simple weapons to use. They also represent this mod’s “Irregular Foot” unit; not ideal, but sometimes necessary. They also fulfill the basic cavalry role of scouting and flanking. Finally, there are the minor youkai, who can fight better than fairies, but are still relatively weak. At the bare minimum of “can fight”, they’re the mod’s Light Spear/Swordsmen Medium Foot unit. All fairy units have slightly smaller models than other units; this is purely aesthetic.

Animal Realm:
This army is a combination of the three major gangs that control the realm, as well as other beast spirits represented by Minor Youkai. Like the three major gangs, this army does not use the generic fairy units.

Cirnia:
This is a fairy focused army, led by the strongest fairy Cirno. As such, they get access to more generic fairy units as well as the Below Average Fairy Spears. Fairy Spears represent an army attempting to use fairies as a core, to varying degrees of success. Cirnia has the deep formation of Fairy Pikes, reinforcing the focus on the quantity of fairies. To the Strongest!

Divine Spirit Mausoleum:
As a human focused faction, this army uses the Human Village army as a base. The Jiangshi are a secondary core of the army, with mindless vigor forward and bodies to spare. Inspired by TGW, this army gets some Human Crossbows as well as the mixed unit of Imperial Guards (Pavisiers and Crossbowmen). There are also Magicians representing Taoist hermits mastering their arts. Due to their leader’s imperial origins, this army gets a higher number of Samurai. This army leans toward the humans more, and as such does not get the generic fairy and youkai units.

Eientei:
Eientei is an isolated mansion in a bamboo forest populated by rabbits. As such, rabbits make up the core of their army. To represent their trickiness as well as Eirin’s training, the rabbits use bows. This army takes some inspiration from TGW and gives the rabbits crossbows as well. The massed bows and crossbows get stakes to represent impromptu traps. The rabbits also get sharpened bamboo spears and heavy mochi pounding mallets. The mix of spears and bows form the Mansion Guards, the only Heavy Foot this army gets. Finally, there are the Lunarian Deserters, moon rabbits equipped with guns and bayonets.

Gouyouku Alliance:
One of the Animal Realm gangs. This gang is known for aerial warfare. To represent this, the Eagle Spirits are mounted archers.

Hakurei Shrine:
As a human focused faction, this army uses the Human Village army as a base. The Shrine Maidens use bows because it is a weapon they are associated with in media (hama yumi). Despite being dedicated to pacifying youkai, many of them hang around the shrine. To represent this, this army gets access to a small number of the generic units.

Haniwa:
The Haniwa army is based on haniwa warrior statues, which included swords, horses, and bows. The Masterpieces take all three of these elements to combine them into one strong unit. To represent their motif of “armor”, they also get cataphracts. They’re supported by the human spirits in the form of massed archers and spears. With the focus being on the haniwa and supporting humans, there are no generic units.

Hell:
As a fairy focused army, Hell gets an increased number of fairy units. They also get the Lampads, who have the power to inflict insanity. This is represented as them being Impact Foot Warriors. Hell is one of two factions that get access to the very strong oni units. Renowned for their strength, the oni are elite units. Their skirmishers include strength based javelins and slings while the Warriors will fight like warriors.

Human Village:
Standard defensive spearmen represent humans best, as they seek to remain secure within their village walls. Archers support them. The Foresters and Hunters represent those willing to leave the safety of the walls to get the materials outside. Their best units are the samurai, who fight as mounted archers.

Kappa:
The kappa have highly advanced technology, so they get access to the crossbows and guns. They also get tanks. Tanks have the 16 AP, much more than the standard artillery wagon. Their price is increased accordingly. There are only kappa working together, so there are no generic units. This faction can also represent the yamawaro.

Keiga Family:
One of the Animal Realm gangs. This gang is known for using brute force, so their units get Impact Foot and Knightly Lancers.

Kiketsu Family:
One of the Animal Realm gangs. This gang is known for sneak attacks, so they use the long range bows.

Kirisame:
It seemed fitting that the other main protagonist of the series, Kirisame Marisa, would get her own army. This is a human based army, so there are units from the Human Village. However, due to the army’s base location being in the dangerous Forest of Magic, there are no Raw Human Spears. This army also takes a few units from the Makai, Scarlet Devil Mansion, and Kappa armies to represent the three partners the leader has worked with previously (Alice, Patchouli, and Nitori, respectively). There are also Magicians as the leader is one.

Lunarians:
The Lunarians are the most technologically advanced army, and so their entire army consists of using guns. The Darts capability represents the rabbits using the bayonet defensively while the Light Spear capability on the Veterans show their offensive capability. They also get Tanks due to their technology.

Makai:
Makai is said to be even scarier than Hell. The units try to represent that with disordering Abominations (elephants) and Beasts (camels). There are also the Impact Foot Demons. The miasma is supposed to help magicians train, so they are included in this army.

Moriya Shrine:
This Youkai Mountain based army has grand ambitions and as such takes some units from the Tengu and Kappa, who are also based on the Youkai Mountain. As a Shinto shrine, this army does have access to the Shrine Maidens, though not as many as the Hakurei Shrine.

Myouren Temple:
Due to the proximity to the Human Village, this army uses it as a base for its roster. As a Buddhist temple, it seems fitting to have Warrior Monks. Due to the philosophy of achieving coexistence between humans and youkai, this army has a high number of Minor Youkai units, along with access to the generic fairy units. There are also Magicians as the leader is one.

Netherworld:
This army takes inspiration from TGW and themes it around feudal Japan. From this, the army gets large spearmen units and supporting archers. However, their quality units come from their cavalry in the form of Samurai and Lancers.

Reimaden:
Mima, the leader of this army, was the main antagonist of Story of Eastern Wonderland. This army assumes Meira and Rika, two of the bosses from that game, were working for her. They and Marisa are all human, so this army uses the Human Village army as a base. Due to Reimaden being far from the Human Village, there are no Raw Human Spears. Meira is a samurai, so this army gets some extra Samurai units. Rika is a tank engineer, so in addition to the required Tank unit, this army also gets cannons and crossbows. The extra Minor Youkai represent the Bakebake that appear in that game.

Scarlet Devil Mansion:
As a fairy focused army, this army gets extra fairy units as well as Fairy Spears. However, the army is more focused on the trained Fairy Maids. Thus, Fairy Maid Spears are maneuverable and up to the quality a fairy could be. Additionally, since the leader of the army wants to emulate Dracula, Fairy Maid Cavalry and Fairy Maid Light Cavalry are the same as the Wallachian versions. Taking inspiration from TGW, this army has heavily armoured knights. Finally, there are Magicians due to Patchouli, a magician.

Tengu:
The tengu are a martial society based on speed. As such, they are a cavalry focused army, where the infantry are also quick. To represent their martial prowess, they have access to Knightly Lancers. Since this represents only the Tengu, this army does not get the generic units.

Underworld:
Taking inspiration from TGW, this army has the bow-armed Cat Carts, in the form of heavy and light chariots. This is also the other faction with access to oni units.

Youkai Revolt:
This army takes inspiration from Double Dealing Character’s storyline in which many minor youkai band together against the social order. As such, this army has a high number of generic units. Fairy Spears appear due to the great number of fairies. The Massed Minor Youkai is the army’s core fighting unit as it is their only average quality Heavy Foot unit.
