Royal Marriages, heirs, and what happens if there isn't one?

Post by Tharoz »

Is the Royal Marriage Regional Decision the only way to get your heirs married?

I am in the fairly precarious position (for medieval times anyway), of my rulers only heirs being female, and the queen being beyond childbearing age (she's 49). So the game reports I have no valid heir, and 0% chance of a newborn.

What are the practical implications of this? Will the eldest daughter inherit? If so, why does it say I have no valid heir? Will one of my nobles take over? If so, which one? Is it game over? I doubt this, given that I've read about dynasty age resetting if your line dies out (which suggests its not necessarily terminal). But there is no information I can see on what actually happens.

Neither daughter is married to my knowledge, I understand the Royal Marriage decision would remove them from the game, but as I mentioned above, its unclear if this is the only method of marrying a character.

This issue has made me very aware of the scarcity of information provided to the player in FoG:K, and although I've been enjoying it a lot. If I had to give a criticism of this game, it would be the severe lack of genuinely informative and useful tooltips, and that the manual is frankly next to useless, with its severe lack of actual detail of mechanics. Another great example of this is spy networks. What is the point of even mentioning them in the manual if what is printed is all you are going to say?

There is no decision to marry off your daughter(s); it's entirely voluntary and done through the Diplomatic interface. A royal marriage can lead to one of the two countries ceding some regions or being entirely bequeathed to the other.

If you die without an heir (which can be a son, brother, or uncle), then another noble will step in and restart the dynasty. There will probably be a civil war, but it might not happen depending on the deceased ruler's authority. This can lead to significant changes with a very competent new king (or an abysmal fool! ).

Information is dispersed across tooltips, in-game help [?], Tips (which you can read all at once from the Options menu), some advising messages (starting with 'My Lord ...'), and the manual, which took a lot of effort but could not keep up with all the additions over three and a half years. It's true that there is no single, comprehensive, up-to-date, authoritative source—except if you could open my brain, but you wouldn't do that, right? Barring this ill-advised move, ask in the forum, and we will try (the veteran beta testers and I) to answer to the best of our knowledge and availability.

It's a complex game with a lot of moving parts. It has a lot of content to stand out from the competition and keep returning Empire players entertained for a long time. This might have come at the expense of some difficult bumps for new users (or many returning Empires players). Sorry about that.

Re Spy Network: Add one in your own country, it will provide general and constant bonus to rolls on many decisions. Then plant in hostile countries, for the same. It's the essence of it.
