All units need to trace a supply route to a supply source. If they can't get to a supply source they will be out of supply with supply level 0 and lose 1 step per turn. These units are marked with a red circle.

Surface naval combat units (DD, BB, CV) can provide supply level 1 to an invasion area if they're adjacent to a land hex within the invasion area. This is typical to do when you make an amphibious invasion and haven't captured a port yet.

There is one exception to this and that is with the Mulberry rule. After a specific tech level in surface ships (if I recall correctly) the Western Allies get the mulberry technology. This means surface naval units provide supply level 2 instead of 1 if they are within 10 hexes of a port in UK or USA. That would have the naval invasion of e. g. northern France easier.

If you invade with amphibious units and don't place surface ships adjacent to the invasion area then your landed units will be out of supply until you can capture a supply source. So a good strategy against Sealion is for the Allied player to destroy the Axis surface ships giving supply to the invasion area in Britain.

Paratrooper and partisan units will always have a supply level of 1 so they can remain behind enemy lines without losing strength due to no supply.

You make amphibious units from land units by first placing them adjacent to a friendly port and then load the unit. The amph unit will be located in the port hex or an adjacent sea hex if the port hex is occupied. From the sea hex you can move the amph unit to the destination hex where you can unload the unit to make an amphibious invasion.
