There was a river running through the middle of the battlefield with areas of rough too. These had an impact on how the battle progressed. Initially, the Avars managed to rout some of my light troops and even several Cataphract units in the centre, mostly by firepower, but my light troops and massed archers - protected by rough and the river - did better on the wings and then the Cataphracts started to rout some enemy in the centre too. Overall, the battle was won more by firepower than melee.

AKvGoeben (Lysimachid with Hellenised Thracian allies) defeats mh5064 (Macedonian), 35-64.

Vicious pike battle in the centre whilst cavalry engaged on both wings. Centre fight was going poorly for Lsyimachus but the superior cavalry contingent on the right were able to defeat their counterparts and return just in time to hit the Macedonian phalanx from the rear, saving what was a losing battle up to that point.
