Charge/Pursuit of Broken Enemy

Post by Bugle999 »

Situation is as follows:

1. In the Impact phase, LH BG A charges LH BG B + Gen which are fragmented.
2. B fails its cohesion test and routs directly away from A.
3. B's rout move is blocked by other enemy troops so it stops short of this enemy (1 MU away).
4. BG A therefore contacts B in the rear.

Questions?
1. We assumed no combat takes place in the Impact phase as B is already routing.
2. Does B lose a base because it has been contacted by pursuing troops?
3. Does A get a 10 up chance to kill the General with B?
4. Does B wait and then rout again in the JAP phase (as nothing happens in the melee phase)?
5. When B routs its path is blocked so it is destroyed (we think). Does it still rout the 1MU until it touches the blocking enemy or does it explode in situ?
6. If B does have to move the 1MU before exploding, does A have to pursue the !MU as well OR right up to 'nearly touching' the friendly BG that was blocking B's escape OR does A remain in place and watch it all happen?
7. At what stage can the General attempt to leave B or is it destrioyed with the BG?

Good one ;)

Correct
2. Does B lose a base because it has been contacted by pursuing troops?
Interesting, I think no because the chargers are still chargers at this point
3. Does A get a 10 up chance to kill the General with B?
Assuming I was right with 2 above then no
4. Does B wait and then rout again in the JAP phase (as nothing happens in the melee phase)?
No, at the end of the impact phase the routing BG is removed see P100 initial rout blocked by enemy
5. When B routs its path is blocked so it is destroyed (we think). Does it still rout the 1MU until it touches the blocking enemy or does it explode in situ?
B turns, tries to rout, can't move if it is withing 1MU so doesn't move, gets hit by the chargers and then is removed at the end of the phase
6. If B does have to move the 1MU before exploding, does A have to pursue the !MU as well OR right up to 'nearly touching' the friendly BG that was blocking B's escape OR does A remain in place and watch it all happen?
B definitely does not have to move. Infact it can't
7. At what stage can the General attempt to leave B or is it destrioyed with the BG?
See the geneals with BG thread in this forum for a long and complex debate on this one.

Hi Hammy - thanks for quick response.

In Q.4 you state that B is removed P100 'initial rout' etc - However, this is NOT B's initial rout as its initial rout move was away from the charge when it failed its cohesion test?

Can you clarify please?

Every time a broken BG has an enemy BG in contact it must make an "initial rout move'. The difference is broken BG must take a VDM roll, and enemy BG too, instead to move to its normal movement rate.

marioslaz - thanks understood.

In Q. 2 surely the chargers become pusuers immediately the target routs (by definition they are 'pursuing' routers)? Therefore a base is removed and the 10 up throw is made - is there a definition of when a BG becomes a pursuer?

A follow up question. When the BG explodes in situ after the Impact phase (because they are within 1MU of enemy), what happens to the General?

Cheers

So you are saying that the initial rout had room but that a subsequent rout didn't?

A BG only ever routs once in a phase. In this case the BG routs because it fails a cohexion test when charged. That is it's rout for the phase. There is no further rout movement until the JAP.

Actually I think I have confused things...
From what has been said B would not even make an initial rout (not even to 1MU away) because its rout path is blocked by an enemy unit . It would just remain in place and be destroyed at the end of the phase and as you say this means A would not be capable of moving whatsoever!

What would happen in the circumstances you allude to i.e. where there is room for the just the initial rout with A catching B in the rear?

Are you sure about that? I would think as soon as you roll a VMD you are now a pursuer rather then a charger (as documented by the fact that you are no allowed to make another wheel to follow evaders/routers).

Actually no, if you charge and your target breaks you don't roll a VMD. This is a bit odd but when it was dicussed a while back people concluded that the rules are clear and there is no VMD in this situation.
