New Avatar: Free French NCO (1st DFL)

Post by LN59 »

Hi All,

1st DFL means "Première Division Française Libre" (First Free French Division, mainly composed of Infantry).

Here is the portrait of a French non-commissioned officer that you can use as a personal avatar in multiplayer...
or to illustrate a homemade scenario, or even a campaign involving Free French people.

I hope to be able to offer you soon others, including leaders, simple fighters (Land, Air, Sea, Resistance) and therefore women, French people from mainland France (1939-40, Free French & Vichy), and courageous fighters from the Colonies.

Path to copy files in Windows 7, according to <Order of Battle: WW2> installation tree (to be adapted on more recent systems).

You can change the number in the file name to ensure that the corresponding avatar and commander files appear well
in the game, the editor and the multiplayer lobby. Take care not to overwrite an already existing picture!

Unless I'm mistaken, there are a few free locations such as slots #98, #99, #134, #136 and beyond.

Hi, Terminator!

 Sorry for Windows 7! :?

I apologize but still think that computer-gaming champions will be very good at making the necessary adaptation
on their own machine. My situation is such that I have to make do with a machine dating (already!) from 2014
and the system (legally acquired) which was installed on it.

Particularly for hardware-related reasons, I'm unable to upgrade to a more recent OS and sadly cannot afford
to purchase a more modern computer. Not knowing Windows 10 or 11, I do not pretend to give instructions which
could turn out to be incorrect.

Furthermore, since its release I have gradually acquired the entire <OoB:WW2> series on the Slitherine e-shop
and activated it on Steam. Finally, this represents a tidy sum, but the game still runs very well although limiting
certain graphics options. I confirm this to the community!

It's not "nothing", isn't it?

Without wanting to moarn, I had to choose between keeping my old computer - or upgrade/renew it every 2-3 years -
and a very good game that fully satisfies me. But yes, I'm just lucky that it still works with my dinosaur...
So, a big "Thank You!" to its creators.

Yes, I know WDS very well!

Especially since I have been a fan of the <Squad Battles> & <Panzer Campaign> series from the HPS era.
That is to say in another millennium!

THEIR (WDS) colorized portrait really pleased and even intrigued me because I wanted to personalize it for use
in <OoB:WW2>. So I looked for the original on French sites dedicated to WW2, including this one:

https://www.france-libre.net/

... where I found THE ORIGINAL IMAGE I have used (sepia, not colorized - Please, see my previous post on the same thread) ;
as well as the trace of the NCO in question, a 1st DFL's fighter whom I don't despair of finding identity and journey of war.

Here is the same man as "Adjudant-chef", two years later (Summer 1944*):
La 1ère DFL de passage à Guéret.jpg

... photographed in the center of France when his unit was on the way to the north of the Massif Central,
then the Vosges after its landing in Provence. Why this interest? Quite simply because I'm French,
not ashamed of it and having remained passionate about History since the age of 12
(now a retired history & geography teacher).

3° "Soldat du Bataillon d'Infanterie de Marine".

This is not a Private (French: "Soldat") but an "Adjudant" (English: Warrant Officer).
The term "Infanterie de Marine" can be confusing for an Anglo-Saxon reader.
It has nothing to do with the Marines (Royal or U.S.) because in this case the exact term in French is "Fusilier marin",
which could be embarked on a warship, like other Navy crew.

The synonym of "Infanterie de Marine" is "Infanterie coloniale" (Colonial Infantry) for the metropolitan troops sent to
- or those recruited in - the Colonies were financed by the budget of the "Ministère de la Marine" (Ministry of the Navy),
as under the "Ancien Régime" (before 1789), because it was in charge not only of the war fleet but also of the French
colonial empire's protection.

I would be very happy to have your opinions and advice for this project.
Thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
LN59 :)

What are the features of your old computer to still run this game ?

Hi, Terminator!

I will send you all these informations via the site's private messaging service.
There you will find my system specifications as well as all my gaming settings.
I wish you a good reception of it and hope that it will be useful to the players'
community of an excellent game called: <Order of Battle: WWII>.

"Long Life to Him!" :D
Yours,
LN59

Nota Bene.
Oh! Yes, I almost forgot: all the <Skins> files as well as the <Custom Scenarios> or <Custom Campaigns>
and <Mods> files installed on my computer (Battle of Britain, Korea, Micromod, NavalMod & SquadMod, etc.) work perfectly...

Hi, All!

To avoid any copyright or image rights issues, I now decide to adopt a more sober "vintage sepia" style
for the French portraits that I will make available to the community, free of charge and for strictly
non-commercial use.

I will not change the portrait of the "1st DFL French NCO" already uploaded (I spent too many hours on it)
but it will also be provided to you in the same chromatic style as the 30 (or even 40) other real and
known characters that will be POSTED HERE in the near future, at least I hope so...

They will all be consolidated into a single zipped file, including a document containing essential biographical
data, and their source. The advantage for everyone will be that I will go much faster to create it and therefore
put it online because I am not really an "eagle" when it comes to graphic editing!

See you soon, 8)

What is strange is that we have his picture in the folder Content\Graphics\Avatars but not in the file Content\Data\Avatars.txt :
