Elo rankings and map rerolls.

Post by rbodleyscott »

We are currently discussing how to implement allowing map rerolls by ignoring early concessions (for Elo ranking purposes) in tournaments that allow map rerolls.

(I am not sure this discounting concessions before turn 3 thing ever in fact existed in the beta. There was no code to make it so.)

Presumably map re-rolls can only occur on each player's first turn?

If so we would only need to discount concessions on each player's first turn.

Tell me if I am wrong.

----------------

However, that leaves the issue of immediate concession in MP games which have not been agreed to allow re-rolls. Surely they should be Elo scored as normally, otherwise a player can simply concede with no penalty if he does not like the look of the map.

So we would need to put a check box in the UI for "allow map rerolls" to be checked (or not) when the challenge is created.

Comments?

This is generally true. Historically there have been situations where two players might say, "let's play on and maneuver a bit to see if either of us gains an edge before we draw." Sometimes a game results where a draw might have happened. That would not be possible anymore, but I think it no great loss.

Excellent idea. Might need a tooltip explaining what that check box is.

I agree with SB.

Rerolls for maps are all done on first turns in all the events I've played in which allowed them. Having an option box would address this.

Restarts where players mutually decide they want to start over due to an obvious draw developing, on the other hand, are allowed up till the 3rd turn atm in TDC, but they are, AFAIK, very, very rare. If such a resigned game is counted as a draw, due to no scoring accumulated at that point, and thus not impacting ELO, I don't see this as a problem.

Maybe there was a time lag in the rankings being updated, that could account for my missing the scores.

The proposal for a extra check box is good.
