Hi, is there any way of knowing when a light horse unit is going to evade when charged? I had an undamaged light horse javelin unit charged by another undamaged light horse javelin unit (first combat of a game). My unit evaded and was hit in the rear . Why didn't it just stand and fight?

Light horse will always evade if it's a flank charge. If it's from the front, they'll evade if a non-light can charge them or if they'd get immediately flanked by staying in melee. Finally, they'll evade if the combat odds are poor enough that the risk of getting caught is better.

Good question on the unpredictable evade behaviors of light cavalry units. Unfortunately there isn't a clear way to know definitively when your light horse will stand and fight versus attempting to evade when charged.The decision comes down to a dice roll modified by the specific stats of each unit, commanders involved, terrain, and other battlefield conditions. So even two identical light horse units could make different calls.My guess is your unit's lower morale roll triggered the evasion from the enemy light cav charge despite both units being undamaged. A string of bad dice luck essentially!It can definitely be frustrating to have your tactical plans undermined by flaky light cav, especially when outnumbered. But such is the tradeoff for their speed and harassing abilities. Managing their higher unpredictability is part of the challenge.No great answer here aside from trying to shore up their leadership through commander attachments and avoiding situational penalties. I thought commanders had no effect on morale unless they were in combat and within one square of a unit in their line of command. For light horse units, that would usually only mean the C-in-C as most people don't bother to put them in commands (I do).

Correct. Though the 50POA they add can make a difference to evasion calculations. However yes, the key thing to keep in mind is that they take into account whether standing would allow them to subsequently be flanked or charged by a more powerful unit.

A lot of times it's just random. I use LH a lot and have seen all sorts of what I thought silly evades or stands rather than evades. The same with cavalry. It's just one of the crazy factors you need to consider in mounted fights and make contingency plans for.
