Tournament Timeout Rules

Post by CaptainPunka »

The Tournament Rules state, " If neither player has claimed victory before the time runs out, we adjust the scores based on how much time each player took to play their turns. The aim of this adjustment is to prevent stalling tactics where a player sees they are in a bad situation and stops playing and waits for the game to time out."

I wonder if the "adjustment" needs to be tweaked some as it does not seem to be working in two recent games of mine. I'm playing in both currently running Field of Glory II tournaments. In an earlier match, I was about to claim victory and my opponent did not play any turns for the final 3 days and claimed the victory. The results page showed no adjustment.

Then, in my latest Ancients match (round 4 of "3rd Century Crisis"), my opponent was wonderful (no ill intent on his part), but unfortunately we had several turns to play, I had a couple of his units in a bad state (fragmented) and we ran out of time. Firstly, there was no indicator that the match ran out of time even though there were several turns remaining (i.e. the "T" indicator on the game results. Second, I'm pretty sure I submitted my turns on a much faster turnaround (my opponent even commented as such), but I saw no adjustment to the final score.

I don't care that much as I am just playing for fun. But it does seem like a good system to adjust scores based on games not finishing, and in at least 2 cases where that would be applicable, I saw no adjustment. Thoughts?

I've never looked closely at how it works. Our game recently timed out and the score wasn't adjusted, but I had a game in the medieval tournament earlier which timed out and I was given 75 points for the win (one more turn and I probably would have won by more).

Perhaps if you play your turns fast enough, by some measure, the scores don't adjust. The three days without a move sounds annoying though.

My understanding is timed out games are automatically awarded to the player who had the lowest turn around time over the course of the match. I rather envision it as a chess-clock; your time starts running as soon as your opponent uploads his file and stops as soon as you upload your finished turn. At the end of official time, who ever has used the least time wins.

After several successive tournaments where I won matches in this manner and advanced, I gave up on Slitherine Tournaments. I much prefer the variety of user run events in our forums here instead.
