Round 1 result.

Stew101's Visigoths defeat Armchairbaron's Lombards.

Score 48 to 15.

In a close match both sides anchored their right flanks on a wood and attacked on their left.
The battle developed into a huge clash of lines, diagonally across the field, between these two woods.

It was nip and tuck, with Visigoth warbands wavering and Lombard lancers, holding on in a couple of spots, where they were outnumbered. Then the AI stepped in and decreed that the Lombards should have a terrible round. A couple of holes opened, which the Visigoths had fresh lancers they could throw into the holes.
A Lombard collapse then followed.

My hero's the dross warbands plugging key gaps.
