Supply Q&A

Post by scarfacetarraff »

Here are two pics of my forces out of supply. The only reason I can gather is because of winter. Is that correct? Both are either in light winter or winter.

Also, I landed two divisions of Line Infantry south of Rome with a Frigate along the coastline. My units were out of supply the next turn. Do ships not allow for supply when adjacent to a coastal, connecting hex - as in CEaW? Or, is it a certain ship only, similar to how subs cannot provide supply in CEaW? I just checked the manual, but nothing is noted by the unit type descriptions. Hm, maybe I'll look for supply. ;)

Weather was the culprit.

Do units in CNaW lose supply once encircled as in CEaW? I ask because a Russian Light Cavalry unit was able to go on a tear capturing undefended locations after I had it encircled. Does it lose supply over subsequent days?

Yes, cut off units lose supply, but it takes several turns for them to get down to zero. Unlike CEAW, where an out-supplied unit will go down to zero supply immediately. Also, in CNAW you can't get supply from ships on the coast. Each system has its benefits and drawbacks.

Yes, CEAW was WW2 and we chose to emphasis front lines hence out of supply rules and ZOC penalties were made more harsh. In Napoleon, group or swarm formations are more likely to happen now since supply rules are less harsh and ZOC penalties less.

Plus, armies were a lot smaller in Napoleon's day, so they wouldn't need nearly as many supplies. Most of the time, you didn't have millions of men duking it out with each other in any given area. The way you handled supply differently makes sense for the different time periods.

The manual states that you can get supply from Naval Units on the coast on page 33. Is this incorrect? My French units on Sicily are completely out of supply even though there's several ships on the coast.

Yes that is incorrect and an error, it is a rule in CEAW that was removed for CNAW.
