Help! I just want to color with my crayons!

I wound up in this forum following information about how I might paint my ships in Polaris Sector. Where are the textures hiding and what programs will I need to extract them into a usable format? I color on them, add some sick racing stripes and I can call it good. Then I can drop them into a mod directory, right? That's how it usually works with games like this. I'm not trying change how the game acts or reinvent anything. I'd like it to stay just how it - is only my ships are b@da$$!! I just want my ships to be awesome...and maybe paint the other guys' ship pink or something I haven't decided maybe draw a wang on it, as one does.
