un-fair game play?

Post by menstein »

when i first played PBEM i answer my phone, half into my move, quit the game.so i returned and put the game back on, opened PBem only then i noticed it.ok lets just say a sub attacks, move your ship to counter the sub.
sub moves south (hidden) u know its within a move,so move south no joy, quit game(b4 ending your move)load PBEM again, move ship no joy,(quit the game, load PBEM)move ship jacpot u know sub location. this works with all moves so the question un-fair game play?

No, the game play is fine, you basically have just illustrated the limitations of wargaming via PBEM and nothing else. Want a long list of other wargames that have the exact same problem?

Essentially I never play wargames by PBEM for EXACTLY this reason. It's sad, but every last wargamer you meet will be entrely human, so I will ask that you not say anything sounding like 'well just don't play people you can't trust'.

I like games where the play is live ie no option to quit, load quit load etc. For instance playing Civilization IV this way is fun.

I think the main reason people take so long to move some times is just a real life problem....ie we have jobs, partners and families to spend time with!

Personally I'd like to think people dont cheat (and how ever you spin it, reloading again and again is cheating)

If I was playing a game where my opponent seemed to find my hidden sub again and again and always with his/her 1st unit to move then I'd be suspicious, but at the end of the day its an honour system....look at the AAR forum....how many players trust their opponent not to look?

I think its also about whether you want to enjoy the game or spend hours trying to optimise each and every turn - which would get very boring given that later in the game you are potentially doing so many combats that the game engine will tend to average results out across the turn, and also given that you cant save a PBEM turn, mid turn, the save occurs only once you choose end turn). So someone would have to be pretty anal to want to try to win that way....
