This is a question I have wanted to ask for a long time, but I suspect every person will want something different!
I personally like more upper level decision making. As it stands epic battles are like a game of chess, they require intelligence and thinkong, but it is less about some grand strategy and more “can I get this enemy into a position where I can flank them.” As for how to fix this I’m not sure, perhaps let the player deploy their armies outside of battles where it is thematically appropiate (eg. The player’s army was historically surprised or ambushed) thus letting them take advantage of the terrain or their unit compositions in potentially interesting ways.

In my opinion, the main change needed for epic battles is to add a time limit. I played one that went 70 turns before I quit (my opponent wanted to continue playing). Several others have gone on longer than I think is reasonable. All battles should have time limits, I don't understand the rationale for not having them in epic battles...

Absolutely agree - I gave up playing epic battles in MP because of players who run into the map corners or run away to drag out the game, knowing that they have infinite time.

Sometimes I think they want to "win" by making their opponents quit in disgust.

If I want that kind of drudgery, I expect to be paid well for my wasted time

Sorry to bump into this two year old thread. I was reading the comments and the various points of view on Epic Battles and Campaign mode are interesting. I just wanted to share my thoughts has a player who, although I have 500 h on FOG2, I consider myself still inexperienced and with a lot to learn. So, in that regard, I feel that both Epic Battles and Campaigns have been very helpful for me, each one in different aspects. On one side, Epic Battles are a great way to jump into a falvourful battle, without having to go over the deployment phase. They allow us to experiment different strategies and play either as the easier side (historical victor) or with the underdog and try a real challenge (regarding that we adjust game difficulty). On the other side, the dynamic of the Campaigns allows me to experiment with different troop types and see how they fare against different factions. Also, the fact that the force selection on a battle depends on the outcome of the previous battle makes things interesting because of its downsides and upsides. The downside being that if you suffer a certain% of casualities you will be handicapped for the next battle (which makes you be careful with some decisions in battle) and the upside being that if you plan an be careful, you can have a better army composition from battle to battle because if you recruit poorer quality troops, they will improve from battle to battle (so, you can spend your points in some raw forces for reserves in the first two or three battles and they will upgrade gradually as the campaign progresses.).

I am making a series for YouTube on the Epic Battles. Pydna is quite fun so far. I am Macedonia and I have an elephant to deal with on my left, rough ground patches in the centre, and a swarm of light horse and cav on my right. A lot of decisions to make on where I move. An entertaining battle.
