Round X (period III): phase 1. Upkeeping and Raising Byzantine Armies
The Byzantine Player eliminates armies that he can not afford or does not wish to keep, pays upkeep costs for all his existing armies (1 x strength), and raises new armies (2 x strength).
SnuggleBunnies: you currently have 8 gold, of which 7 will be used to upkeep your existing armies (unless you decide to eliminate any of them or reduce their strengths), leaving 1 gold. How do you want to spend your gold this round?

Rosedelio (Latin) defeats SnuggleBunnies (Byzantine) 60-49
The Latins concentrated an attack on the Byzantine's right hill while delaying contact on their own right. This gave the slight edge to win the battle as the victorious left moved to aid the battered center.

3. PALESTINE: Lennard (Mamluk Egyptian 1340-1399 AD, 1600 FP) versus SnuggleBunnies (Byzantine (Central) 1262-1399 AD, 1600 FP). Middle-Eastern Agricultural
SnuggleBunnies (Byzantine (Central) 1262-1399 AD) defeats Lennard (Mamluk Egyptian 1340-1399 AD) 57 - 60
A large mounted Mameluk host with some accompanying infantry faced the Byzantine army - mostly consisting of Massed Archers supported by some Spearmen and Heavy Cavalry as well as a good number of light Archers - on difficult terrain with many patches of rough ground, some woods, some enclosures and a little swamp. The map was further narrowed by a large uncrossable river. Seeing all this and failing to realize (in time) that he would be able to retreat and choose a different battlefield (reroll the map), the Mameluk commander gave the order for a desperate mass assault on the Byzantine positions. The plan was to somehow find a way to get the Mameluk cavalry and Medium Foot into melee against the Massed Archers. To achieve this Mameluk light Foot were thrown into unfavourable melees, hoping to silence some Massed Archers, while Horse Archers utilized ugly fallback blocks to pin the Byzantine Spearmen and to remove their ZoCs.
Skirmishes first ensued on the flanks, but soon – with the Mameluk plans partially working - the whole battle turned into a mess as the main lines met. This was at first to the advantage of the Mameluks as their more mobile forces allowed for some flanking opportunities and good melees, but as the fight dragged on, the Byzantines managed to break more and more of the Mameluk host, while getting some important rallies for themselves. This lead - in spite of the Emperors death - to a Byzantine victory.
GG and well played to SnuggleBunnies!

Byzantines emerge victorious, 43-13, concluding battles for the turn - and, if I am understanding the rules correctly, for the campaign?kronenblatt wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 10:14 pm 1. Re: Campaign conclusion
No, thank you for organizing and running for the past year and three months! This was a very enjoyable format that I think could work in a variety of settings with light rules tweaks. I will post a link to the complete playlist in a week or so when I have the final battle edited and posted.kronenblatt wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 8:45 pm Many thanks everyone for participating, especially SnuggleBunnies of course!
