Division D
principes romanes (Roman 199 + Numidian allies) defeats nonovitch (Seleucid 166) 65-53
The Seleucids had the blessing of a strong defensive hill on their side of the battlefield that the Romans predictably wanted nothing at all to do with. The opening phases of the battle comprised of the Roman army shifting hard to the left in the hopes of getting enough around the main Seleucid line on the hill to concentrate numbers in a way that would make engaging uphill tenable. Seeing this audacious maneuvering, the Seleucids charged down from their hill hoping to engage the disorganized Romans in the midsts of their maneuver. The Roman rearguard formed up a hasty line at the base of a gentle hill before getting caught. Seeing this line would be quickly outflanked, the Romans pushed on into the weaker Seleucid flank they were targeting from the beginning. The Roman flank started collapsing first but a few well placed reserves were able to delay the Seleucid ability to exploit the victory. Meanwhile, the opposite Seleucid flank collapsed very suddenly and dramatically.
The result was a bit of a breather as both victorious sides ran out of enemies to keep engaging. The lines were dressed for the second phase of the battle - but the Romans now held that sweet starting Seleucid hill! This second phase of the battle went decisively in favour of the Romans. Maybe something to do with M. Bodenius, Roman C-in-C, jumping on an elephant and charging the remaining Seleucid cataphract. Maybe something to do with forcing the strongest remaining phalanx to engage its hastati counterpart in the rough. Maybe something to do with just having an extra unit to set up some devastating flank attacks.
In the end, a Roman victory but it looked very close during the main fight and no doubt could have gone either way. Merci pour la partie!
This is the last of my games, so thank you to all my opponents and to the organizers. I had a lot of fun and (hopefully) learned a thing or two to make me a better player!

dragmio with Aragonese 1275 - 1319 managed to pull off a win against mcfcivo with Seljuq Turkish (West) 1037 - 1154.
The score: 62-58
In a closest of games, the harder hitting Aragonese and the more manouverable Seljuqs entered the final turn with the score 58 - 58. There was no direct contact nor it was possible anymore. So one unit of Aragonese light archers shot at a unit of Seljuq cavalry. And the cavalry autobreaks.
Lady luck has smiled at me big time.
Thanks for a great game mcfcivo!

Morat (German/Poles) drew with Triarii (Armenian/Byzantine) 64-61
A game which the Germans were lucky to come out of with any honour at all. Initial manoeuvring saw the Armenians press on the right and in the centre, and by skilful general ship secured a series of favourable match ups. The heavy German infantry were pinned by lancers and the cataphracts and byzantine infantry started to make short work of the opposition threatening disaster.
The turning point was a couple of German units showing the sort of stubbornness which has been distinctly lacking in previous games. One fragmented dismounted lancer unit held on for an age and then rallied and fought back. Gradually a mix of dismounted lancers and the remnants of the heavy cavalry started to claw their way back.
In the end a draw was the least the Armenians deserved, and on another day with even a degree more luck this would have been a thumping win to them.
Many thanks to Triarii who - as always - fought an excellent battle in a great spirit.
That finishes my games in this league. Thanks to the organisers and all my opponents for a terrific time.

I'm learning some quick, tough lessons in this period, in the present division company.
But sometimes lady luck can smile on you & a plan comes together.
Stew101 (English) therefore defeats Tyronec (Sicilian Hohenstanfen).
Score 62 - 36.
