Whoa, those Varangian Guard units are formidable.
Heavy Foot, Highly Superior, Well Armored, Heavy Weapons
At 87 points, I suppose they damn well better be good, but still.

The Standard Wagon is a weirdness. If you haven't read the rules about it, I respectfully suggest you open up the manual, hit Ctrl-F and start reading. It's complicated.

I suck at cavalry armies. With an army that's mostly infantry, I look at the army lists, I look at the map, and a plan is formed in my tiny little mind. With an army that's mostly cavalry, I look at the army lists, I look at the map, and....nothing. I haven't got a clue. The truly obvious question would be, "If you don't like the cavalry armies, why did you sign up for a tournament about Hungary?". I don't have answer to that one. I see a FOG tourney, I click on it.

These army lists are interesting. The Hungarians can potentially bring 10 Horse Archers and 8 light HA, if you include the Szeklers. The Byzantines 12 and 6.

This map is really open in the middle. This is going to be a barroom brawl, not something elegant.

I am not a fan of cavalry heavy armies. However, they do bring something different to the game which makes it better with all the variations and numerous match-ups, etc.

The guard is really only good for fighting expensive foot in the open. I don't think they're worth bringing in a battle like this.

This map has two critical hills, and two large patches of forest. It's only going to be an open brawl if both players consent to that, and the logic of doing so is a bit questionable. A push by cavalry in bow shot of either the hills or the forest is dangerous - so even though both armies are limited in infantry, the infantry battle for control of forests will be/is critical to giving the cavalry room to maneuver without getting shredded.

Made it this far and got a timeout, on turn 13, when I was ahead 49-34. Sigh.

Kudos to my opponent, who made a heroic effort to help me get through enough turns on the final day. I do appreciate it.
