Division A
Kroche (Norman 1041-1071AD w French 1050-1154AD allies)
defeated
frederic02 (Crusader 1155-1291AD w Fatimid allies)
45 - 15
Desert map where Normans occupied enclosures on their left with spearmen and dismounted knights. The right was open ground with a combined force of knights, spears and crossbows. Crusaders could occupy a steep hill facing, a few squares away, the enclosures. Crusader advanced a heavy infantry force towards the enclosures with archers firing from the hill. Normans left the enclosure to engage the Crusader spear (and avoid missile fire) and very quickly half of each army was involved in a huge melee. The dismounted Knights gave the Normans an advantage in this fight and their regular spearmen held firm to ensure the Norman line was held as they slowly broke through the Crusader line. The far left of the Norman line was able to advance into some soft archer units and break them. The Norman right had a bit of a stand off with the Crusader cavalry which prevented them from helping in the centre. GG

vakarr Thracian (Roman Client) 50BC - 46AD with Roman allies defeated GeneralKostas Roman 379-424AD 49 - 22.
A very straightforward and quick battle. The terrain favoured the Romans, with mostly clear terrain across the battlefield. The Romans had some steep hills on their right and some forests on their left. The Thracians opted to ignore the Roman hills and massed on their right. There was a convenient patch of rough terrain in the centre, which was used to anchor the left end of the Thracian line. There was considerable skirmishing and shooting around the far left corner of the Thracian line, which was occupied by allied Roman massed archers. With the help of the artillery and other light infantry, they shot up their opponents. It took a long time for the cataphracts to get into action, but they eventually routed the sole Thracian warband unit, which until then had been pushing back the Roman infantry to its front. The few Thracian cavalry on that flank kept the other Roman cavalry busy, actually helping by being routed and carrying away the enemy troops in pursuit. Nevertheless a lone Roman lancer unit got right around the left end of the Thracian line and into the rear of the Thracian position. Two units of Thracian rhomphaia men chased after it but couldn't catch it. It routed an artillery unit but was unable to achieve further successes before the game ended. That situation was mirrored in the Roman rear, where a disrupted Thracian light cavalry bow unit wreaked havoc in the Roman artillery lines.
That's because, on the Thracian right, two ranks of legionaries and rhomphaia men were advancing on a much smaller number of late Roman infantry right at the corner at the end of their left flank, and were able to shoot up the Romans then charge then in front and on the flank. The Romans couldn't stand up to the overwhelming numbers, and fled. The rest of the Roman army was just arriving and might have retrieved the situation but the game ended.
Bascially, I was lucky, got the deployment right, and just had to advance straight ahead, dropping back the left flank troops, to win. If you have two ranks of troops facing one rank, the double rank usually wins handsomely. The Romans had some fine infantry, but it has to stand to receive a charge to win, and I had the best heavy infantry in the right place at the right time.

Morat (Germans/Poles) beat random27 (Arab) 48-23
Fighting all along an awkwardly placed stream - Arab forces had very little luck: and the battle was tight throughout. If the Germans had not just got over the line, they had a whole series of units ready to fall apart.
Thanks to random27 for the battle.

Rafydedel Lysimachid 320 BC defeats Hari72 Parthian 250BC + Saka allies 40-15
Parthian and saka are a full cavalry army and that didnot look promising to fight them with phalanxes.
The lysimachid gathered all the cavalary they could find to attack one wing of the Parthian cavalry army while the rest of the infantry, elephants and light troops tried to stay compact and oppose the rest of the Parthian; the tactics quickly turned to a game of pushing and chasing enemy horse archer which hindered them from using all their shooting potential.
My army didnot look much of an ordained diadochi army, but that worked
Thanks to Hari for a good game

principesromanes (Roman 199 BC + Numidian allies) defeats DirtyMark (Macedonian 355BC + Greek allies) 43-18
The Romans rushed over a rough hill in the centre with their legionaries to hold the crest before the Macedonians could reach it. Unsurprisingly, the Macedonian general wisely decided to avoid a frontal assault, and hopped to goad the Romans down off their hill with an artillery piece. The Romans were content to accept the staring contest for a brief period. The Roman medium infantry seemed to be winning the fight over the little mountain on one flank and was successfully staring down the Macedonian cavalry on the other.
Eventually the Romans edged down off the hill, leaving their backs to it in case they had to fall back from advancing phalanx pikes. The initial infantry contest leaned in favour of the Macedonians but gaps quickly opened in the formidable phalanx wall. And the Roman legionaries were quickly into those gaps, quickly crumbling the phalanx and routing it from the battlefield.
Thanks for a good game. Definitely closer than it looked. I was lucky the Macedonian cavalry never really managed to make it around my rear.

edb1815 (Polish w/ Hussite ally) defeats paulmcneil (Venetians) 48-23
A large river cut the size of the map by a third reducing the Polish cavalry superiority. The Poles and Hussites deployed a wagon laager line between two towns and awaited the assault of the Venetian pikes and knights. The Poles sent out a light cavalry wing which caused the Venetian knights to chase and attempt to pin them down whilst some more knights and the pike units advanced on the fortification line and a wood on the left flank that was unfortified. The Polish cavalry came out and several pike units were routed while the mercenary Swiss advanced through the fortifications. After the main body of Venetian knights returned several cavalry units were routed as the Swiss were assaulted on multiple sides by Polish infantry. War Wagons also helped pin down other Venetian knights. Ultimately a rallying Polish knight unit tipped the balance in the end.
