Graphics issue???

Hi folks, I'm sure you've seen this before, I bought the core game a while back but I have only just got to installing and playing it. In short, I'm finding the game's graphics very grainy. Probably my old card but thought I'd ask.

The game settings default to the max on everything, when I alter the settings the graphics really don't change by much. I was going the attach a screenshot or two but they actually look better than the game so I didn't think this would be representative.
