Games Industry Question

Post by pompousdivinus »

A question to people with games industry experience:

Have you ever heard of Train2game and their 12months course in games development?

And if so, would as far as you know studios in the industry consider a Train2game course in games development (advocated by the UK trade association for the games industry TIGA) a useful basis to enter the industry?

I know that uni courses usually take about 3years, but unis often do not have a hands-on and practical enough approach...

However, if the qualification was not recognized at all or not considered useful among studios it would be a waste to spend money on it.

Thanks for the input!

If you do a quick google you will see that generally a game specific course will not stand you in the same kind of stead as a solid degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or Maths. If this is in addition to that, then the content of the course and the chance you will have to produce good solid demos to show people would be a good thing to investigate.

I don't know of the course you mention and so can't comment on it, but having a good solid grasp of the fundamentals is much more appealing to many employers. If it is endorsed by TIGA then that counts for something, but you should drill down into what you will be actually doing. These kind of courses do not have the best reputation.

Once again, all this should be on top of a solid degree in a suitable discipline. But a great demo will do more to put your resume at the top of the pile than anything.

Hope that helps

Yes I far prefer seeing examples of work to qualifications.
