Jon,
There are hundreds and hundreds of boardgames to choose from.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com is a great resource.
To save too much OT stuff on this board pop me an e-mail (hammy at the-riverbank dot net) and I will do my best to help.

Yea these are all good. Also be sure you lose the first time you play as that will help having second game.peterrjohnston wrote:As Hammy says, there's a lot of very good family games around these days, often with simple
rules but nice to play. I'd recommend games like Carcassonne, Alhambra and Agricola, all visually
appealing and fun to play - I've known even committed anti-wargaming wives to play Carcasonne!

In October this year I will be at the largest boardgames show in the world. It is in Essen, over the four days of the show visitor numbers are likely to be in the region of 200,000.
There are litterally thousands of boardgames out there if you look for them ranging from the good old AH wargames to the likes of Carcassone or Settlers of Catan. There are competitive games, cooperative games, solo games, board games, card games, dice games, combinations of all of the above.
I have just under 500 boardgames, I don't consider myself to have a really big collection. There are people with many thousands of different games.

Everyone has favourites
For 'social' wargames I would suggest
Sigma File
History of the world
Samurai (Kingmaker)
Junta
Dune
Cold War
Pax Britannica
