Re: New Kingdom Egyptian
If this is the sort of configuration you want to run look at Lybian Egyptian because the IF can be superior. Martin Yeah, I half noted that. I mean I'd noted it prior but had forgotten it... trouble is it's NOT NKE is it? There is something about NKE. Don't ask me to explain it. But you're probably...

Re: New Kingdom Egyptian
I really wasnt trying to be that profound about the merits of Egyptian finesse vis a vis Sea Peoples mindless brutality. All I meant was that if a NKE army maximised Sea peoples (and they can bring a LOT of Sea Peoples) , true their impact foot would do well against most in period enemies, but not a...

Re: New Kingdom Egyptian
In period, the Sea People impact foot may well be able to serve as that threat for the NKE. Not much other infantry will want to face them. Chris This is true, Chris, and a good point. A large Sea Peoples contingent, backed up by Egyptian archers and chariots, might be a very viable option in this p...

Re: New Kingdom Egyptian
My usual method of army selection is 'wow it will look nice, now how do i make it work?' I suppose I COULD look at an army and say 'wow this will work well, now how do I make it look nice?' Trouble is I don't like to join the mob. I like to have something a little unusual. Lotsa armies outthere I g...

Re: New Kingdom Egyptian
I like them too, but, sadly, they are just a poor army. And giving them that silly special interpenetration rule is just a poke in the eye. Yes, they always should have had the evade capablility, and its useful against infantry and cav froma distance, but they don't move fast enough to use it much a...

Re: US Team Tournament 2013
Will the final scores be published by book, or just by team? I'd be curious to see that as well. Particularly interested in how the Maya did against various opponents. As a fan of 'Ancients for Ancients sake' It might be pointed out that some kudos are in order to YMCA for finishing second with som...

Re: ELO-ranking on Facebook
OK, yes, I'm gonna come off as a pedantic jerk here. But a pervasive error of sorts has become the norm, as on the FoG rankings pages, and I'll offer a correction, for what its worth, and take my lumps. It really shouldn't be the ELO system. It's the Elo system. It was named for Mr. Arpad Elo who de...

Re: Seleucids - How does this army handle?
If you check out the army rankings based on popularity-
http://www.slithdata.net/files/fog/rankings.html
you'll see that Seleucids are far and away the most popular FoG army - in fact used 50% more than any other.

Re: Britcon Army Lists
Any chance any of you guys will be posting up your Britcon lists? It's always nice to compare what some people bring to the table compared to what you bring? I would be curious to see the Maya List that did quite well in a tournament otherwise crawling with Knights. Maya seem to be doing quite well...

Re: Free Javelins
Hijacked the thread? The question was why American armies get to have a missle capability, rather than counting the javelins as a close combat support factor. The answer was atlatls. How is the direct answer to the question not relevant? To the question 'Why does one unit get a missle, when another ...

Re: Free Javelins
In game terms, we were trying to get the right historical feel. And indeed it does feel right. There are two seperate questions 1) Why can they throw their javelins and peltasts (ie 'throwers') can not? I think the atlatl concept addresses that. and 2) Why are they free? And the answer to that is p...

Re: Free Javelins
That's interesting. I'll assume you're right about the atlatl's having a range close to bow range. I don't know enough to argue one way or another. If that is the case, however, it may have been better to give them 1/2 Bow (at cost). That would significantly increase their playability. Rear support...

Re: Free Javelins
Agreed x several. however I think this is all missing the point slightly. The argument is a disingenous one. It's not about certain American lists being overpowered, or certain other American lists being underpowered. Fundamentally I think it's about "why can't my peltasts throw their javelins...

Re: What about the actual changes?
I would agree that the question 'are the changes worth the bother' should not be dismissed out of hand. I very much like the fact hat undrilled foot are more maneuverable and drilled foot less so (relatively.) When I showed up at a major tourney with Maya, everyone said 'That's dumb. You should use ...

Artillery are really tough to use - 6" range and very difficult to move.
Only useful in a static shooty army, not a manuever/attack army.

Re: Yuknoom takes to the Battle Road
Excellent report and thanks for sharing. Kudos for bringing a Mayan army to a tournament! You did really well with an impact medium army in an open tournament. Thanks for that! I agonized about choice before painting up the army - let's face it, Maya are hardly 'morphable' into anything else, and I...

Re: Yuknoom takes to the Battle Road
So Sunday morning and a big game. As said, a win here and I go home feeling real good about the weekend and the Maya, a loss and an ok performance but a mild disappointment. I faced Justin's Medieval German States. (Or something like that.) Just like my game with Alan's Arabs, tho one had an oddity ...
