Wildone and I use 5'x3' tables. All good ideas were stolen from Hammy after I wised up to the fact that I didn't have to jump off the bridge too. Or rather, I saw some guys in the US and Aussie were running smaller comps and Hammy's guidlines looked like a good way to do it. It's a bit of a shame to...

800 seems to be the standard. However, at our club (all three of us who play FOG there) we always play at 600. This has been for Cathaginian, Romano-British, Dominate with actual legionaries, and Uyubid (sp) machine guns on four legs . That points level gives us enough points for a good balance of f...

What has this neccessarily got to do with beating people Phil? Winning is always more fun. Well, it may be for you. I always find the close games between guys I generally do not play but who pull out one unexpected move after another, and do not make simple mistakes, to be the most satisfying, even...

While big battles ending in clear routs (when one side breaks, the actual casualites occur) are what I'd think of as 'normal' for ancients and medievals, that may be an artifact of historical reporting. All of the really boring stuff, the long protracted activites up in the hill country or whereever...

This give ground idea is the tactics of LH armies ie Skythian Mongols you will see even fewer that at this present time if you cut 12 inchs from the table width. FOG allows you to manourve which other sets don't sorry don't know about DBM but under MM you both deploy in the middle oppisite and go f...

dave the points are arbitrary anyhow. we just have a convention where we play 800. why? because we used to play 400 under DBM. having played lots of 650 (more a dozen games, won a tournament), i've yet to see wall to wall armour. I'm having the very same conversation with the old DBM players locall...

10 players - NZ has a small FoG scene so reasonable for a local 2 day competition. This was an open 800pt competition. as for the 3 1/2 hours? sorry man, but better things to do that sit in a cold hall on a sunny day. I'm a bit leery about this whole 3.5-4 hour 800pt standard as well. We have been ...

...Maybe the way comps get scored could be changed to motivate people to be more definative in their playing style. We have ganged local Flames of War comps to rank players according to wins and then use VPs to resolve ties on those rankings. We were getting too many players willing to play for a d...

Cheers Hammy. Insofar as I think quicker is better (a FOG game is longer than what I am accustomed to), I'd be more keen on 4'x3' if that turned out to be a balanced format used by comp gamers etc Just one guy in our group seems to be going the runaway Cav route so most of the other forces are HF + ...

Sorry to dredge this up peter777 but I pleased to see some discussion of smaller games and tables. A few of us are getting into FOG at the other wargames club in Chch NZ and we had decided on smaller armies since we play in the evening and FOG painting has to compete with all our other projects. Per...

This is the question that has occupied my mind the most when thinking about my Army design. The MF/Prot/Lspear/Sw BGs form the bulk of the Romano British list in the 'fun' period. Fortunately, it is just possible (with Welsh Allies) to get the maximum initiative modifier. My big worry is Steppe armi...

Looks good I really enjoy Totalwar style games, but the 'realtime' battles become monotonous after a while. The electronic wargame I have enjoyed the most is actually a PS2 game by KOEI, turn based and played on a grid. There's just something about the 'gaminess' of grid/hex based games that really ...

I'd love this and can't wait. My talbetop FOG army is slowly nearing completion, but I just don't have a lot of opportunity to devote a whole night to a real game. It doesn't help that FOG is alread a long game compared to what I am accustomed to (FOW) and FOG also has to compete with the other good...

Hi just a quick note for Arthurian players considering fig options: I ordered a mix of LR and Arthurian (LR and AB) codes for my spear and horse. They were all much of a muchness, some slight differences in the AB ones but you'd really have to hunt them out. Nice models IMO (well apart from that all...

I've actually yet to play a game (and just went for an army based on theme in the end), but something like: lots of HF armoured, off spear mixed in with decent Cav/Kn Lancers (either foot heavy or horse heavy) and a thin veneer of Skirmishers (because I get the impression that they will matter) was ...

Hi vsolfronk, I've got my DBA army's worth of SL and quite a few of their heavy foot. IMO it is a bit of a shame how many of their figs are so heavily armoured, but I think your approach is quite a good one. In my case, the BGs will mix armour types to represent an average rating of 'protected'. I'v...

Late Romans are good troops and are probably the next army for me, since I've always liked them. However, they and the Saxon allies are far before the time of Romano-British success (ie Badon and the following decades where the Saxons kept their respectful distance). As it is, the 'Arthur's companio...
