Re: French, Italian Wars: Crossbow as LF or MF?
Thanks very much for the reply. Horses for courses then. I have LF arquebus for the Landsknechts and/or Swiss so going MF for the Adventurers might make sense for the later period but I'm not sure about having them with crossbows. I have read that Adventurers tended to be skirmishers so I think I'll...

French, Italian Wars: Crossbow as LF or MF?
Which should I choose for my FOG-R French army in the early Italian Wars? I am part way through painting 24 Adventurers with crossbows and had always intended to base them as LF, giving the option of a single 8-base unit or two with 6 each. I'm just wondering though whether basing them as Medium foo...

Swiss arquebusiers in 15mm
I finally finished the arquebusiers to screen my Swiss pike keil over the Christmas holidays, in time for a FOG-R game yesterday against a German States army. http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q590/Midland1965/Swiss%20Arquebus%202_zpsfcantpvq.jpg The figures are from Khurusan, the same as most of ...

Pre-industrial vineyard
I have been making various pieces of 15mm scenery to go with my 16th C Italian Wars French army. One of the things I wanted was a vineyard but all the commercial ready-made ones I could find and the online tutorials showed modern style lines of vines grown on wire. Obviously cheap 100m rolls of galv...

Italian Wars French camp
I have finally finished the camp for my FOG-R French army. I bought the first tent in early 2013 and finished the flags last night - nobody could accuse me of hastiness. http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q590/Midland1965/Camp_finished_3_zpsrri27uso.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q590/Midl...

16th C. Swiss Pike Keil in 15mm
I have just finished the flags for a 14 element Swiss pike keil using Khurasan and Minifigs figures. I normally like to hand paint flags but I needed 4 for the Keil, another for the skirmishing arquebus (on the painting bench now) and 2 more for the camp which I was finishing off at the same time, s...

Louis II de la Trémoille
I have made a bit more progress with my 15mm 16th Century Italian Wars French army, with another general; Louis de la Trémoille. http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q590/Midland1965/Lous%20de%20la%20Tremoille%202_zps3w4fvuyi.jpg http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q590/Midland1965/Louis%20de%20la%20...

Re: Which miniatures for Italian Wars armies ?
I really like the white triad. To my mind it is just right for a pre-industrial white, avoiding the cold blue and grey bases more often seen. I used to use Plaka all the time but availability was always difficult and the range was quite small. Now I am only really using it because I have some pots l...

Re: Which miniatures for Italian Wars armies ?
I have only recently returned to painting bright coloured figures so I am experimenting quite a lot with different recipes and techniques. The 'white' is a simple layering recipe which somebody has posted on Steve Dean's forum (a great resource which has helped me a lot, as has the Artmaster Studio ...

Re: Which miniatures for Italian Wars armies ?
Here is a photo of the lance making process: http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q590/Midland1965/imagejpg1_zps30345397.jpg [/URL] For sanding the lance to final shape, I hold the lance in a pin vise. Rough shaping is with a file to give a uniform cone then with folded-over sand paper wrapped around...

Re: Which miniatures for Italian Wars armies ?
The lances are quite easy. It sounds a long process but each step is quick and, if you do a few together, it doesn't take long at all. I use 0.8 mm brass wire. After shaping the point and cutting them to length, I mix up some Milliput and roll some into a long, thin (about 1mm dia) sausage. I cut a ...

Re: Which miniatures for Italian Wars armies ?
The first thing is which period of the Italian Wars you want to. If it is the very early period then late 15th C figures like Mirliton would be a possible solution. For the 1520s (my own choice for my French Army), for the best results, I think you need a mix and match approach and to be willing to ...

Re: huguenot 15mm figs
Like I said, it is only maybe next on my list and I'm leaning more towards Early Danish (or possibly French Catholic) rather than Huguenot. The immediate obstacle is I have 42 more Gendarmes, another Landsknecht pike kiel and a Swiss kiel for my Italian Wars French to paint first. And I'm not the wo...

Re: huguenot 15mm figs
Really this era is crying out for a nice modern range of figures with multiple variants and the extras like camp followers and baggage that are expected today. I talked to Mr ListLurker about this being his next range and we did a small amount of market research which showed that some people were i...

Re: huguenot 15mm figs
Essex have a specific Huguenot 'Miller' Cuirassier as MER62 and the old Asgard/TTG Miller is available from 15mm.co.uk in their Altuos range as MRC20. I don't personally like the Essex Reiters - the armour just don't look quite right as later 16th C Trabharnisch to me but again Altuos have one as do...

Re: Italian Wars Swiss
Thanks very much, both, for the replies. I had heard that some of their ranges were really big - hence my doubts but I'd certainly replace the pikes and maybe the halberds too. I have some of those exact same Minifigs figures. I'm not 100% sure but I think (back in the 1980's) they were sold as Land...

Italian Wars Swiss
I am putting together an Italian Wars French army in 15 mm and would like to add some Swiss. Most Swiss models seem to be for the earlier wars of independence and not at all suitable. Much the best figures and range I have seen are those from Khurasan but I have read that their figures tend to be ra...

Early Danish - Clash of Empires - Cuirassiers
Can anyone advise what the German and Danish cuirassiers in this list should look like? I'm struggling to find much information for late 16th C (rather than 30YW) cuirassiers. I assume they would look different but in what way - did they develop out of their Reiters changing tactics (in which case R...
