"Allowing" people to take their armies only in certain comps would be disasterous. Who decides what is a typical army for this era? Also a cavalry force fighting a proper mixed arms army, wouldn't happen true, but then again neither would Jacobite Scots fight Samurai or Swiss kiels take on Thirty ...

So, in terms of total bases in whatever you call a 'legion' (sorry there's a minimum in the list so first might be a non starter) options are:

4 T, 16 H+P, 8V
6T, 24 H+P, 12V
8T, 32 H+P, 16V
10T, 40H+P, 20V

Everyone at the club I play at likes V2 a lot but the general feeling of terrain set up being a bit laborious is still there, especially given that it requires both players so one player can't get there early and set up a table.

Thanks for the clarification, just wasn't sure if the "skirmish" light foot bases counted or not. I think this was another case of the more we discussed it the more we convinced ourselves there must be something there that wasn't, the rules have always been pretty clear for us.
