Why would you want to detach out shot as it cost 1 point extra because when you create the army it initally starts as protected and since your army is already created before terrain placement that is points lost.

Yes, I think it is to get around people detaching shot and using them as commanded shot when their armies historically did not.
One of the many issues that I had with another set of rennaisance rules that evovled from an ancient medieval set.

In my opinion,

To your 1st point I don't think that they can expand in close combat neither can any other pike shot formations unless in a single column.
To your 2nd point yes, but I would play 2 in the front rank and 1 in the 2nd.
To your 3rd point I would say 1st 2 ranks front is front, if ...

Overlaps only get 1 die not fight in 1 rank.

This is a subtle distinction as determined horse, chevaliers and gendarmes get 2 die per base in front rank but only 1 die in overlap.

I would take the commanded shot, as David said the Swedish cavalry is flank protection for the foot.

Commanded shot with the cavalry make them harder to break down.

My brother refuses to fight against the Swedes if I put my commanded shot in with the cavalry.

Don't forget the benefits of protected horse, determined horse and chevaliers when they are protected by commanded shot.

Aiming them at the other guys horse is also fun as you are on 4's to hit and usually they are small BG's so can easily cause cohesion checks as well as loses.

Just support them with infantry or have your own horse kicking about to deter them from charging.

Units in Swedish Brigade formation take their armour from the pike so they are armoured whilst the Germans are unarmoured.
That is why the Germans are minus at long range but the Swedes are not.
