I'm really glad I started this thread, it seems to have got a bit of interest going. "Your last sentence catches my eye because very few people seem to understand that every Mexica boy went to a military school." This is one of the reasons why I could never understand the Horde classificat...

Go to any business setting anywhere in the world and try and use CE as your dating system. Computer systems don't use it, calendars don't use it, NO ONE uses it except academia - and even they don't ALL use it. Common Era my left .....

Couldn't agree with you more.

Hi Trench Raider, yes I really believe so. DBM has been the main set of ancient rules for at least the last 15 years and this is what I am basing that comment on. I use the Aztec army for 6th edition, and whilst it is a strong army, it has to be used in the right way. I have seen many players try to...

Or you could go for a 40% cavalry, 60% light horse split. Although these proportions have been questioned over the years, I don't believe they have been totally discredited.

Hi Spring, thanks very much for the links, they will be most useful. I have a copy of the Codex Mendoza, but I have heard it is now out of print, ( at least in English), but that is another useful document if you can get hold of a second hand copy. The colour prints of the tribute lists will be espe...

Hi Flameberge, here are 4 that came to hand: The Conquest of Mexico - Hugh Thomas, good overall history of the period. Aztecs - Inga Clendinnen, a bit heavy going, but she knows her stuff. Probably more of an academic'c view. Aztec Warfare - Ross Hassig, very good, has some well researched chapters ...

Much of Meso American culture revolved around warfare due to their need for sacrificial victims. The Aztecs in particular fought many large scale wars and batles, but within that there was an emphasis on individual combat, especially among the upper classes. Effectively the Aztecs were permanently a...

I suspect all we have here is a difference in tradition between the UK and the America's and New Zealand. Here we have traditionally used 6 x 4 tables, whilst the others have moved to 8 x 5 tables. Possibly this is because in the UK we don't usually play larger games ?

This is something I have wondered about. Being used to playing 6th Edition I am also used to the doubling of distances but not the doubling of table sizes. However, I can see merit in using the same distances as 15mm with smaller armies on standard 6' by 4' tables, and I have been assured by fellow ...

Illyricani were definitely unarmored light cavalry with large shields to compensate for a lack of armour. The Saraceni were probably the Eastern Empire equivalent of the Illyricani. The Promoti were the successors of the cavalry that formed part of the old style legions. These were possibly armoured...

Hi Martin, 25mm 6th edition still has quite a strong following in the UK. The yahoo group has about 160 members and the biggest 6th edition competition at Derby has over 40 players. Things have changed a lot from the bad old days as we all know eachother and the forms of gamesmanship that spoiled it...

Are you referring to the Moors that fought the Romans, or the Moors, as in the Arabs that invaded Spain ? If the latter then you could do worse than Gripping Beast. I have used their figures to build a Berber army and they are very good. If the former, then sorry but I can't be of any help. regards ...
