Re: Fresh status

In a club game last year (a refight of the Second Battle of Taraori) we had some additional rules, one of which was a "Fresh" bonus for cavalry (though not infantry). Any cavalry unit that had not charged or fought a round of impact or melee combat counted as "fresh". In impact O...

Do undrilled guys make a "difficult" move to conta

This question came up in a recent game -- it seems to have gone unasked in all my previous games. My elephants were 2MU away from the enemy camp, and just before I moved them into contact we had a discussion on whether that was a "difficult" forward move. The rules certainly say that an en...

I'd vote for 800 points on 5x3 or 5x3.5. I'd prefer the table being three-feet deep, but I would compromise on 3.5 feet. A long-overdue change.

Orbs have four faces but they are not four bases deep, Phil. Since the rules refer to how to calculate how many bases are in the first and second ranks of each face, then I think it follows that all orbs contain just two ranks. Even a 12-strong battlegroup in orb has just three bases per facing – in...

Version 2 army lists

If a FoG 2.0 rulebook is released by Slitherine/Osprey, but the publishers decline to allow any new official army lists, then it won't sell very well. Many people have mentioned the easy, obvious solution of free online updates/amendments to the army lists. However, this might not be commercially su...

There's a clear consensus that turning 90 degrees and then moving your normal move distance is too much for infantry, and possibly for cavalry, too. Also, infantry turning away from a nearby, approaching enemy and plodding ahead of them safe in the knowledge that they can't be caught is another kind...

Drilled infantry turning 180 degrees and marching away from the enemy can be either perfectly legitimate or very cheesy depending on the circumstances. Turning your back on slowly approaching heavy foot to face a fast approaching group of lancers is a sensible manoeuvre and should not be penalised i...

I really like the idea of non-skirmishers being reduced to fragmented by missile fire but NO further. In the case of infantry, it is easy to imagine them hunkered down behind their shields and suggesting any officers who are keen to advance should lead from the front. Not many are dying, so the unit...

1 A general point about how the rules are presented. Many rules (but certainly not all rules in FoG 1.0) are unambiguous but we still have difficulty applying them in practice. More examples need to be provided in the book – for example on evading and pursuit. This doesn't need to make the rules the...

OK Spike, my train gets in at 12:07, so I should be in the hall and have my army unpacked by 12:15 – if Virgin Snail is on time. See you there.

Hi,

I will be arriving about noonish on Thursday and am up for any 15mm or 25mm practice games. (I'm playing in the 25mm competition with EAPs, but will bring a 15mm Carolingian army for friendly games beforehand...)

Hi Simon

I can field either a Hun or Visigoth cavalry army, whichever is more convenient for you: I don't mind whose side I'm on
