Troop Type

What is the difference between HF,MF,LF and Heavly Armored, Armored, Protected and Unprotected? I've just received the rule book for "Ancient and Medieval". I can see where Armor Class can effect outcomes but where do the rules talk about HF.MF.LF. and how do they effect anything? Thanks K...
